Star Wars’ New TV Show Teases Mara Jade (Is She Ever Going To Be Made Canon?)

Mara Jade has been a popular Star Wars character for over three decades, and fans still hope she’ll reappear in future stories. She began as a deadly assassin tasked with killing Luke Skywalker, but eventually became his ally against Grand Admiral Thrawn, and ultimately his wife and a powerful Jedi Master. Her journey is one of the most compelling in the entire saga, despite the fact that George Lucas wasn’t entirely enthusiastic about her – especially the choice to make her Luke’s wife.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they redefined what stories were considered official parts of the *Star Wars* universe, and Mara Jade lost her place in the main storyline – she became part of the ‘Legends’ collection. Despite this, fans have continued to hope she might return. Whether a story is officially canon shouldn’t change how much people enjoy it – Mara remains a great character! However, being outside of canon does feel like a loss, and it would be wonderful to see her story continued. Recently, the *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past* TV show mentioned her name, which is a small but encouraging sign.

In the second episode, set in a different galaxy, the character Yesi sends out a plea for help to the Alliance, calling out names like Watto, Hux, and surprisingly, Mara. The inclusion of established characters isn’t shocking considering this show reimagines Darth Vader as a Jedi and Jar Jar Binks as a Sith Lord. However, the mention of Mara is interesting – it’s likely a reference to Mara Jade, and suggests she’s aligned with the good side in this alternate universe, though she doesn’t seem to have any connection to Luke Skywalker, who is portrayed as a relaxed surfer. It’s a shame, then, that even including Darth Revan – a character who, like Mara Jade, originally existed outside of current Star Wars canon – hasn’t led to a return for Mara, despite LEGO featuring Revan in the show.

Could Mara Jade Return To Star Wars Canon?

It’s surprising that even with characters like Darth Revan and Darth Jar Jar appearing, Mara Jade is only mentioned by name – and not even her full name! This show seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring her into live-action. Does this suggest Lucasfilm is still hesitant to fully include her? Maybe. However, the recent mention of her name is a small step and creates a foundation for a potential future appearance, beyond just the Rebuild the Galaxy series – though even just hearing her name spoken on screen is a positive sign.

The current direction of the Star Wars story is heading towards an event featuring the character Thrawn, and it will likely draw inspiration from the novel *Heir to the Empire*. However, some plot points and characters will probably be altered. It’s possible we’ll see the character Mara Jade, a Force-sensitive individual with red hair, introduced as well. The story could easily establish her past as the Emperor’s Hand, a title that already exists within the official Star Wars universe, though not currently associated with the group of assassins it was in older stories. Given the secrecy surrounding Palpatine’s plans, incorporating her backstory shouldn’t create major contradictions.

It’s difficult to realistically make Mara Jade Luke Skywalker’s wife. While not entirely impossible, it feels unlikely. Luke doesn’t seem like someone who would quickly form that kind of deep connection, and she isn’t mentioned in the newer Star Wars movies. A possible story could involve them meeting during the fight with Thrawn, falling in love, and then her either leaving or tragically dying a short time later. However, the timing is tight, making a meaningful relationship difficult to portray, and it begs the question of whether it’s worth including at all, even if it’s just a brief connection.

Rumors suggest Amy Adams might play Mara Jade in a future *Star Wars* film, potentially meaning the character would survive events involving Thrawn and even appear in the sequels, which are set five years after *The Rise of Skywalker*. While this seems improbable, speculation about Mara Jade’s return to the *Star Wars* universe will likely continue as long as new content is being created.
