Darth Vader is a key figure in Star Wars, but he’s always been something of an outsider within the Empire. He doesn’t quite fit into their established structure, and even his Inquisitors operate largely independently. When he’s first introduced, Imperial officers openly tease him about his use of the Force and his belief in an old religion. They seem aware he’s a Sith Lord, but they don’t appear intimidated by him – only Grand Moff Tarkin treats him with the respect he deserves.
It seems this was all part of Palpatine’s plan. While most Sith follow the Rule of Two – training an apprentice to eventually overthrow them – Palpatine never intended to be replaced. He was obsessed with achieving immortality, even exploring methods like cloning through a project called “Project Necromancer.” By not establishing a clear position for Darth Vader within the Sith hierarchy, Palpatine ensured Vader couldn’t amass enough power to become a threat. However, as Cavan Scott’s Terror on Mustafar reveals, Vader did hold one significant title, recalling a powerful designation from the older Legends stories.
Darth Vader is the Emperor’s Fist

Throughout the Empire, Darth Vader is feared as the Emperor’s right-hand man. He served as Palpatine’s enforcer, dealing with anyone who defied or disappointed the Emperor. While his initial mission focused on eliminating Jedi who survived Order 66, Vader was also used to suppress civilians. This is depicted in Lamar Giles’ novel, Sanctuary, part of the Bad Batch series, and also in the Star Wars: Outlaws video game.
Darth Vader, as the Emperor’s main executor, has the power to take any resources he needs, even taking over entire planets, as demonstrated in the story Maul – Shadow Lord. However, his power comes entirely from his connection to Palpatine. Vader is the one who carries out the Emperor’s will, but Palpatine decides how that power is used. The title cleverly highlights how reliant Vader is on Palpatine, and how carefully Sidious has kept him under control. It’s a brilliant choice for a title.
Before Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, the title “Emperor’s Fist” was frequently used in Star Wars stories outside of the main films and comics. Now, it’s officially back in canon with the story Terror on Mustafar, where it’s suggested that the Empire widely used this title to describe Darth Vader. This makes sense, as Palpatine would likely see it as a fitting description, highlighting both Vader’s immense power and the boundaries of that power. The title subtly implies just how powerful the Emperor himself must be – if Vader is simply his ‘fist’, what level of strength does Palpatine possess?
