The Biggest Homelander Theory Looks More Likely After The Boys Season 5, Episode 6

Be warned: This article reveals major plot details from Season 5, Episode 6 of The Boys, titled “Though the Heavens Fall.” As the show heads into its final two episodes, the challenge of stopping Homelander seems insurmountable. It was always going to be incredibly difficult to defeat the most powerful superhero, but now, after Soldier Boy gives him V-One, it feels nearly impossible. The situation is dire, and even Billy Butcher, who is usually confident, sounds scared as he urges the team to escape.

V1 essentially makes Homelander invincible, and it’s possible the show will go that route. Having the villain win and kill all the heroes would be a surprising twist on the usual superhero story. However, I don’t believe Eric Kripke would end the five-season show on such a dark note, especially after viewers have become so invested in the heroes and their fight against Homelander. I don’t think he’d take away all hope like that.

Even though Homelander is incredibly powerful with V1, things aren’t hopeless. Several possibilities remain for the story, but after the latest episode, Soldier Boy seems like the biggest game-changer.

Soldier Boy Could Still Depower Homelander In The Boys

Just before giving Homelander the V-One compound, the show reminds us that Soldier Boy has a remarkable ability: he can strip other Supes of their powers. Importantly, this ability works even on Supes who’ve already been given V-One, as demonstrated with Bombsight. While the story partly serves as a setup for the upcoming prequel, Vought Rising, which takes place in the 1950s and features both characters, the timing of this power reveal suggests it might be intentionally kept in viewers’ minds for future events.

Since Homelander is unmatched in strength, this plan offers their best chance to stop him, and it might be more impactful than just killing him. He’s always feared losing his power, becoming weak, or aging – that’s why he sought V1 and wants to be seen as a god. Taking away his abilities, instead of killing him while he still has them, would likely be a far worse punishment for him, one he’d find impossible to accept. It also avoids the complications that would arise if another character killed him and claimed the victory.

Everything seems to point to one likely result, with just one small problem: Soldier Boy is firmly on Homelander’s side and just gave him the V-One. It doesn’t make sense he’d then try to remove Homelander’s powers. Wouldn’t it have been simpler to do that before making him immortal? It’s a significant complication, but not a dealbreaker. Soldier Boy has already changed sides once this season, and while he still dislikes his son, he seems to favor Stormfront even more.

He might decide to change his plans after being reminded of his son – and the aspects of himself he dislikes – realizing he doesn’t want either of them to live forever, which is understandable. It’s also possible he orchestrated everything, giving Homelander the V1 to make him feel secure and then depowering him at his peak to maximize the impact of his downfall. Alternatively, Stormfront could still be alive, and after being rejected by Homelander, she might now want him eliminated.

As a huge fan, I’ve been thinking about how they’ll take down Homelander, and it might not be Soldier Boy doing the deed directly. Butcher’s been obsessing over those old Russian experiments with Supes, and I get the feeling he thinks he’s close to a breakthrough. Maybe he’s figured out how to actually remove someone’s powers? Now that Sister Sage is helping, it feels like they could actually pull it off, but honestly, time is really running out, and it’s making me so anxious!

Even if Homelander doesn’t lose his powers, there are still paths to defeating him. Marie Moreau could potentially manipulate his blood to make him vulnerable, and Ryan Butcher has already proven he can seriously injure a V1 Supe – as seen when he fought Stormfront. Despite losing to Homelander earlier in the season, Ryan did manage to draw his father’s blood, demonstrating his own strength. It’s likely a combination of these factors, or something else entirely, will ultimately lead to Homelander’s defeat in the final episode of The Boys.

New episodes of The Boys release on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
