For the past few years, Star Wars has been exploring the possibilities of anime, and now a key person involved has hinted at how amazing the upcoming full-length anime series will be when it launches later this year. Star Wars and anime have proven to be a great combination, with the Star Wars: Visions anthology series – three successful seasons so far – offering a fresh, new take on the science fiction universe through the work of various anime studios. However, those were all short films until now.
A full anime series based on the popular short “The Ninth Jedi” from Star Wars: Visions is currently in development. Last year, Josh Rimes, an executive producer and VP of animation at Lucasfilm, discussed the project with Polygon. He explained that Lucasfilm is much more involved in this series compared to the Visions shorts, and that it’s already proving to be a significant undertaking.
Why The Ninth Jedi Continued in Star Wars: Visions
When the Visions anthologies were created, we started to consider how to build on the Visions storytelling format beyond short films,” explained Rimes, discussing the idea of a full anime series. “The success of the shorts and the talent of their creators really gave us rich worlds and compelling characters and adventures.” Rimes also shared that they felt the original “The Ninth Jedi” short had a lot of potential for a sequel and further development.
I was immediately drawn to the expansive feel of The Ninth Jedi, and the first short film hinted at a huge adventure ahead, so it was natural to start talking with director Kenji Kamiyama and the team at Production I.G,” Rimes explained. “We loved their excitement about Kara’s search for her father and her goal of rebuilding the Jedi Order, and how those two storylines could connect or even clash. However, Rimes also shared that the full anime series is shaping up to be a very different kind of production.
Star Wars Exec Teases New Anime Series

Rimes explained that creating the first full anime Star Wars series was a massive undertaking, and they’ve been supporting the team from the very beginning – from initial ideas and designs, all the way through production as the story developed. He says it’s shaping up to be amazing and they’re excited for everyone to see it next year. However, there’s no confirmed release date for the series just yet.
The upcoming limited series, Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, was first revealed last year. Director and writer Kenji Kamiyama, who worked on previous Star Wars: Visions shorts, is returning for this new installment, which will be set after those earlier stories. It’s expected to be released this year, giving fans something to look forward to.
