Eric Barone, the creator of Stardew Valley and known as ConcernedApe, has hinted that a sequel might be possible in the future. Even though Stardew Valley came out ten years ago this month, it still gets regular updates and new content. Despite the game’s continued success, fans keep asking about Stardew Valley 2, and Barone hasn’t ruled out the idea.
In an interview with IGN, Eric Barone, the creator of Stardew Valley, mentioned he’s open to the possibility of making a sequel. He had previously thought about Stardew Valley 2 but decided to focus on his new game, Haunted Chocolatier. However, he still has ideas for a sequel and is enthusiastic about it, though he’s still figuring out what the game would be about.
Barone expressed enthusiasm for creating a sequel to Stardew Valley, saying he’d love the chance to build a completely new world and set of characters. He’s particularly excited by the creative possibilities a fresh start would offer, hoping to recapture the energy he felt when he first began working on the game in 2012. However, he acknowledges the challenge of moving beyond Pelican Town and its beloved villagers, and worries that players might not embrace a completely new cast of characters.

The developer considered a direct sequel to Stardew Valley, potentially reusing the original characters within a new story. However, they weren’t sure if that would feel too similar to the first game. They actually started working on Stardew Valley 2 at one point, but ultimately shifted focus to Haunted Chocolatier. The developer views Haunted Chocolatier as a spiritual successor to Stardew Valley, offering a fresh experience while still capturing some of the same magic. They are currently evaluating the future direction of the series.
During the interview, Barone discussed the future of Stardew Valley, suggesting a sequel or spin-off could happen, but not until after Haunted Chocolatier is released. He also stated that he plans to be fully involved and dedicated to any future projects related to the Stardew Valley franchise.
The next big update for Stardew Valley, Update 1.7, is expected to be released sometime in 2026. While there’s no exact date yet, the developer, Barone, may share more details around February 10th, which marks the 10th anniversary of Stardew Valley.
