A review published prematurely revealed the Steam Controller might cost $99. Now, another early review, this time from the Japanese website 4Gamer, suggested the controller will launch on May 4th. Both the review and its related social media post have since been removed.
Fortunately, Reddit users saw the review before it disappeared, and screenshots are still available online showing it clearly states the Steam Controller would launch on May 4th.
In addition to the review text, a Reddit user collected all the images published with it. These include standard photos of the Steam Controller, its USB cable, and the charging dock which also serves as a wireless receiver. One image shows the controller weighs 292 grams. The collection also features comparison shots with the back of an Xbox controller and an older picture of the original Steam Controller.
We still don’t know when Valve will release the Steam Machine, their pre-built Linux gaming PC. However, because they previously said it would come with a Steam Controller, it seems they intended to release the controller either before or at the same time as the Steam Machine.
Our report found that the Steam Controller, at $99, is the priciest controller currently available. The DualSense is more affordable at $74.99, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller comes in at $89.99 – closer to the Steam Controller’s price, but still less expensive.
Valve first showed off the Steam Controller, Steam Frame, and Steam Machine in November. This new controller is a significant improvement over their previous version, released in 2015 and discontinued in 2019, and shares a similar comfortable design with the Steam Deck. In addition to traditional buttons and joysticks, it features trackpads on both sides and four additional buttons on the back.
The controller also boasts a six-axis gyroscope and allows users to replace worn-out parts. Plus, it includes a magnetic charging puck that attaches to the back for easy battery charging.
Valve initially aimed to release its new hardware in early 2026, but global memory shortages have caused a delay. In February, the company stated they needed to adjust their release dates and prices, though they still intend to launch all three devices in the first six months of the year.
Hey everyone, just wanted to give a quick update on the three products we’re working on. We’re still aiming to get them all out within the first six months of the year, that hasn’t changed! But we’re still figuring out the exact prices and release dates. We want to be totally sure before we announce anything, because things can change quickly, you know? We’ll keep you posted as soon as we have solid plans, promise!
