Stephen Colbert is sharing a message for his replacement.
Before the final episode of The Late Show airs on May 21st, the host discussed his reaction to the news that comedian and media executive Byron Allen‘s show, Comics Unleashed, would be taking its place.
Okay, so when I heard the news, I immediately wrote to him – like, first thing the next morning! I basically just told him congratulations, that I’d heard he’d finally gotten the time he needed, and how awesome that was. Then, I couldn’t help but suggest he send a quick note to Mr. Carson. It just felt like the right thing to do, you know? I was so excited for him, and I just had to say something!
The 61-year-old was talking about how he became the youngest comedian to appear on The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson hosted it back in 1979.
“I feel sorry for him,” he said, continuing, “I actually met Byron last year, and he’s a really interesting person.”
When asked about the possibility of another show like his taking over, Stephen Colbert simply said, “That’s not something I worry about.”
He supports the person taking over his show, but was surprised to learn in July that CBS was ending The Late Show after 33 years, reportedly because it wasn’t profitable.
I’ve been a huge fan of Stephen Colbert ever since he took over The Late Show back in 2015, and honestly, I’m really interested to see what happens with late night television moving forward. He seems cautiously optimistic, but I know he’s also thinking about how changes will impact his friends and colleagues – guys like Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon. It’s a bit nerve-wracking for all of us who love these shows!

The former host of The Colbert Report admitted he’s unsure about the future and can only offer the same support he’s given for the past eleven years. He also expressed a fear that one day, he’ll turn on the television and find no one watching.
As Stephen Colbert approaches his last month of shows, he’s clear about how he wants The Late Show to be remembered.
He finished by saying he hopes people will think of his work as a source of comedy. At its heart, their job is to make people laugh, and that’s what matters to him most – simply bringing joy to the audience.
Ahead of Stephen’s final show on May 21, read on to learn the fate of other TV shows…
