This year has been great for Stephen King adaptations, with *The Long Walk* already receiving positive reviews. And there’s more to come! Another of King’s stories about a troubled future, *The Running Man*, is getting a new movie adaptation. Since King himself enjoyed *The Long Walk*, there’s hope that *The Running Man* will also be a hit.
After the last trailer for Glen Powell’s *The Running Man* was released yesterday, Stephen King shared his thoughts – and he loved it! He went on to say he thinks it’s a truly great action film, even comparing it to some of the best in the genre.
BTW: I’ve seen it and it’s fantastic. DIE HARD for our time. A bipartisan thrill ride.
Calling something “Die Hard for our time” is a big claim. Die Hard is widely considered not just a good action movie, but possibly the best ever made – it’s always near the top of those lists. Is Stephen King suggesting that The Running Man deserves to be mentioned alongside it?
One person who is likely quite hopeful that is the case is star Glen Powell. He made a point to post King’s comments on Instagram, which will almost certainly hype up the fans looking forward to the movie coming out next month.

King doesn’t necessarily agree with that comparison. However, it’s easy to see why people might draw parallels between the two films. *Die Hard* was so influential in popularizing the action movie trope of a single hero against overwhelming odds that the phrase “*Die Hard* in a [Insert location here]” became a common way to describe similar movies attempting to replicate its success.
Actually, *The Running Man* fits right into that same type of action movie. Surprisingly, it came out *before* *Die Hard* and all the films that copied its style. The movie follows Ben Richards, who’s forced to compete in a deadly game show where everyone in the world is trying to kill him. In many ways, it’s very similar to *Die Hard*.
Although *The Running Man* and *Die Hard* share a similar plot structure, Stephen King’s comparison highlights the high quality of the new film. This is exciting news for fans of Stephen King adaptations and Glen Powell, but also for anyone who enjoys a good action movie – it’s definitely worth checking out.
