Stephen King’s Most Underrated TV Show Is Finally Streaming Free After Almost 30 Years

Hollywood continues to draw heavily from the works of Stephen King. Since the 1976 film Carrie, many of his novels have been adapted for the screen, and more are on the horizon. A Carrie TV miniseries, along with new films based on The Stand and Cujo, are currently in development. While some King adaptations are hugely popular, others have faded into obscurity – including one TV show that’s now available to stream for free after being unavailable for almost three decades.

While Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is the most famous adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, a three-part miniseries version also exists. Directed by Mick Garris and based on a script by King himself, this series began streaming on Tubi November 1st. Similar to the movie, it tells the story of the Torrance family and their unsettling winter at the Overlook Hotel.

Stephen King Prefers The Shining Miniseries Over Kubrick’s Iconic Film

Stephen King disliked Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film version of his novel, feeling it missed the story’s central ideas. However, he approved of the 1997 miniseries, as he actually wrote the script himself. Being more involved allowed King to fix what he saw as problems with the Kubrick film, creating a more accurate and respectful adaptation of his book, especially in how it portrayed the character of Jack.

The miniseries received rave reviews, with publications like Variety highlighting its suspenseful atmosphere and unexpectedly moving storyline. However, the huge success of the film version ultimately overshadowed the miniseries, causing it to be largely overlooked.

While some of the special effects and scares in this miniseries haven’t aged well, it’s still a fantastic watch for Stephen King fans. This three-part show, easily enjoyed in a five-hour binge, adds details and settings from the original novel that the movie left out, giving viewers a richer backstory for the Overlook Hotel and a deeper dive into the book’s supernatural side.

Other Horror Titles Now on Tubi

If you enjoyed the recent The Shining miniseries and are looking for more scary content, Tubi has a lot to offer this November. You can dive into a multi-season show with Dead Like Me, a popular supernatural comedy-drama from the 2000s. For movies, Tubi is featuring several Stephen King adaptations, including both versions of Carrie (1976 and 2013) and Misery. Other horror films now available on Tubi include classics like Child’s Play (1988), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), and Thirteen Ghosts.
