Stephen King is a huge name in horror, and many of his books and stories have been turned into famous films like The Shining, Misery, Carrie, It, and Pet Sematary. But out of all his adaptations, only one is a werewolf movie, and it’s returning to streaming this month – and it’s available to watch for free.
I just finished watching Silver Bullet on Tubi, and it’s a fun horror movie from 1985! It’s based on one of Stephen King’s stories, Cycle of the Werewolf, and he actually wrote the screenplay himself. The movie stars Gary Busey, Everett McGill, and Corey Haim – a great cast! Honestly, it’s not super scary, but it’s become known as a really good werewolf movie over the years. It didn’t get a lot of love from critics when it first came out, but I think Busey’s performance is particularly memorable and stands out even now.
Silver Bullet Might Be the Most Underrated King Adaptation

In the movie Silver Bullet, a young boy named Marty Coslaw, who uses a wheelchair, becomes convinced that a werewolf is responsible for a string of brutal murders in his small town, Tarker’s Mills. He, along with his sister Jane and uncle Red, begin to investigate, eventually discovering the killer is someone well-known and respected in the community. While critics didn’t like it, the film didn’t perform very well at the box office.
Despite what critics said when it was released, Silver Bullet isn’t a bad movie – it was simply a product of its time. The 1980s were dominated by Stephen King adaptations, including hits like Cujo, The Shining, Christine, and Firestarter. It’s understandable that Silver Bullet suffered in comparison, especially since it doesn’t reach the same heights as The Shining. The film also very much embodies the style of 1980s horror, particularly its special effects, which, while dated by today’s standards, were typical for the era. If you approach Silver Bullet with that in mind, it’s easy to enjoy. It’s a classic, fun ’80s horror film with an entertaining performance by Gary Busey, and it has a surprising amount of satirical depth. It’s also interesting to see Megan Follows in a horror role, considering she was simultaneously known for her wholesome portrayal in Anne of Green Gables.
