Steve McQueen was a star in many iconic films, including classics like Bullitt, The Magnificent Seven, and The Great Escape. While these movies are considered some of Hollywood’s best, filmmakers continue to revisit and remake them for new audiences. We’ve already seen updated versions of The Thomas Crown Affair (with another starring Michael B. Jordan in the works) and The Magnificent Seven. Now, another one of McQueen’s famous films is being remade – for the second time.
Netflix is working on a remake of the classic crime thriller The Getaway, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Philip Barantini, known for directing the popular series Adolescence on Netflix, will direct the new film. Peter Craig, the screenwriter behind The Town and The Batman, is writing the screenplay. Currently, details about the cast, when production will begin, or when the movie will be released haven’t been revealed.
The Getaway Is Being Remade for the Second Time (But When Will We See It?)

You might remember a remake of Getaway already happening. A version with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger came out in 1994, but it wasn’t successful, earning only $30 million at the box office despite costing $37 million to make. Interestingly, neither the original film with Steve McQueen, nor the ’94 remake received good reviews when they were first released – though the McQueen version is now viewed more favorably. Netflix obviously believes there’s still an audience for this story.
The streaming service has assembled a talented creative team. Craig’s previous work shows he’s a good fit for writing a crime drama, and Barantini has won several awards, including two Emmys, for his work on Adolescence. They seem like a strong pairing, though it might take some time before The Getaway really gets going. Barantini is currently filming the new Netflix series Rabbit, Rabbit (created by Craig) and also has Enola Holmes 3 coming up, which is set to premiere on Netflix in July.
So, if everything keeps going well with Rabbit, Rabbit, it looks like we’re probably a couple of years away from seeing Barantini’s version of The Getaway. Honestly, that’s probably a good thing! It gives Craig time to really perfect the script and, more importantly, allows the filmmakers to find the perfect couple for the leads. The Getaway really lives or dies on the chemistry between the two main characters, so they need to do a really thorough casting search – lots of screen tests to make sure they find actors who truly click!
Just because a project is announced doesn’t mean it’s definitely happening. Things often change during the development of movies and TV shows, and people involved might leave. Currently, it seems like The Getaway is director Barantini’s next focus after he finishes Rabbit, Rabbit. Netflix is clearly excited about The Getaway and wants to move forward with it quickly. It remains to be seen whether the film will be shown in theaters or released directly on Netflix.
