This weekend, Netflix is removing the classic film Jurassic Park as it moves to Peacock. While that’s sad for fans, another Spielberg movie is coming to Netflix – though it’s newer and hasn’t been as universally loved.
Starting November 1st, you’ll be able to watch the popular 2018 sci-fi movie Ready Player One on Netflix. This is the first time the film, based on the novel by Ernest Cline, has been available on a major streaming service in a while. It was a big success when it came out, earning close to $608 million worldwide.
What really grabbed me about Ready Player One is all the amazing references to things I already loved – from classic horror icons like Jason Voorhees to movies like Back to the Future and even giant robots like Mechagodzilla. It’s what made the virtual world in the story feel so real and exciting! But honestly, it also felt like the movie was relying a little too much on those familiar things to carry it. It was awesome seeing everything, but I couldn’t help but wonder if it would have been as good without all the pre-existing characters and stories.
Whether you enjoyed Ready Player One or not, its popularity is undeniable. It’s also significant because it’s the first big science fiction/action film directed by Spielberg in quite a while. While these kinds of films were common throughout his career, he hasn’t made many in the last 15 to 20 years. Before Ready Player One, his last large-scale adventure film was the 2011 animated movie The Adventures of Tintin, and he hasn’t directed another one like it since.
