Makoto has access to a variety of weapons, including knives, mallets, and hammers, throughout his adventure in Stranger Than Heaven. However, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio didn’t just reuse the fighting mechanics from Like a Dragon. This new game features a completely redesigned combat system, which producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto calls one of its most important aspects.
The controls let you move Makoto’s left and right sides separately. The RB and RT (or R1 and R2) buttons control his right arm and leg for attacks, while LB and LT/L1 and L2 handle his left side. It’s similar to the fighting game Tekken, where each button is assigned to a different limb.
Okay, so when I’m playing as Makoto, hitting the buttons in the right order lets me pull off some awesome combos. I can also hold down buttons to charge up my attacks, and I can block with one arm while still hitting with the other. Plus, if I press LT and RT (or L2 and R2 on PlayStation) at the same time, Makoto will tackle an enemy and even mount them! If I manage to tackle someone near the stairs, we both go tumbling down – it’s pretty hilarious, honestly.
Besides common tools and weapons, you’ll find powerful, unique items – both ancient masterpieces and newly created inventions. These items have special abilities and attacks that can be improved by finding the necessary upgrade materials.
Like classic games from RGG Studio, this game features over-the-top, cinematic fights. Expect intense action sequences, like brawls on moving vehicles and instant-kill moves, along with interactive moments triggered by the situation. For instance, you might see a character holding an enemy steady while another delivers a knockout punch.
Get ready for Stranger Than Heaven this winter! This exciting release combines a compelling story with a unique character system, and it’s heading to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
