Season 5 part 2 of Stranger Things was packed with dramatic scenes, as each character faced crucial challenges. However, one particular return stood out, and director Shawn Levy has now shared what went into making it happen and hinted at how it will affect the climactic showdown with Vecna.
Max returns to life at the end of episode 6, “Escape From Camazotz,” and the start of episode 7, “The Bridge.” In a recent interview with Variety, director Shawn Levy hinted that Max could play a crucial role in the final showdown with Vecna, even though the story is nearing its end.
I’ll always remember filming the first scene of Season 5 after Max was brought back to life. It was in the laundry room, with her on the table, and Sadie Sink and Caleb McLaughlin delivered some of their best work in just one take. Many of us on set were moved to tears watching them. Max’s experience with death gives her a unique ability – she’s ‘been on the other side,’ so she understands Vecna and can help us figure out how to defeat him. She’s become a key strategist in our fight.
Stranger Things’ Shawn Levy Reveals Which Season 4 Episode Connects To Max’s Return

Before Max’s escape, she has a deeply moving scene with Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher). According to the director, the scene is powerfully acted by both actresses and intentionally mirrors a similar moment from season 4’s ‘Dear Billy’ episode – viewers will notice the parallels when watching the two scenes together.
Directing a scene in Episode 6 was a highlight for me. It featured powerful, emotionally charged performances from both Nell and Sadie, and the writing was fantastic. It felt especially meaningful to Sadie and me because the episode mirrored our ‘Dear Billy’ episode from Season 4 – an episode we both feel deeply connected to. Like that earlier episode, it used a red background, a dramatic run combining normal and slow motion, and a new version of the song ‘Running Up That Hill.’ It wasn’t a coincidence that these elements were similar; we intentionally echoed that previous work.
I’ll always remember filming that scene – it felt like a fitting conclusion to the story we told in ‘Dear Billy’. Sadie and I kept coming back to that ending, and it’s something we’ll never forget. Fans constantly remind us of it too, which is amazing. We wanted the set – this strange, red space with unusual structures and a hint of another world – to represent Max’s hopes and dreams. Seeing her look through the misty portal and find Lucas still there with her was incredibly moving, and it clearly affected Sadie and everyone involved.
The final season of Stranger Things, split into two parts, is now available to watch on Netflix. Both parts will be available to stream by New Year’s Eve.
