Fans are still reeling from Eddie Munson’s (Joseph Quinn) death in Stranger Things, and his loss will have a significant impact on the show’s fifth season.
Even though the creators, the Duffer Brothers, say Sadie Sink’s character, Max, won’t be back for the final season, Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, has hinted that her impact will still be felt, especially after the connection the characters formed last season.
It’s incredibly unfair to him. Dustin is starting to realize he’ll have to live with the fact that people hold terrible opinions about someone he deeply cared for and knew to be a good person, and that’s understandably upsetting and makes him feel resentful.

At the start of season 5, viewers will see a different side of Dustin, one that’s much more troubled. Gaten Matarazzo explained that everyone is struggling, and Dustin becomes very focused on his own issues. This leads to conflict because he’s not really hearing what others are saying, and they aren’t listening to him either.
Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, mentioned a sense of isolation, and Gaten Matarazzo agreed, adding that the characters experience conflict and discord. He said it was a rewarding, though more difficult, acting experience, and that he enjoyed the challenge.

As a fan, I always love seeing characters go on really interesting journeys, and that’s what makes a role special as an actor. While I would have absolutely loved to come back for another season and see everyone again, I honestly think the show gave my character a perfect, satisfying ending – it was just such a well-written character to begin with!
This season culminates in the epic final showdown for Hawkins. Our heroes face the challenge of a town under military lockdown while dealing with the mysterious disappearance of Vecna.
But something tells us he won’t be gone for too long…
Stranger Things 5 part 1 premieres on Netflix on Wednesday 26th November 2025.
