Nintendo has surprisingly released a new update for a well-loved Super Mario game, even though it was removed from sale years ago. While Nintendo occasionally stops selling older games – something we’ve seen recently with the closure of the 3DS and Wii U eShops – this update is unexpected. It’s especially good news for players, and hints at potential support for the game on future platforms like the Switch 2.
Nintendo recently updated Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a collection of classic Mario games originally released for the Nintendo Switch in 2020. This compilation included remastered versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. However, Nintendo made the unusual decision to remove the game from both the eShop and physical stores in March 2021. This was because Super Mario 3D All-Stars was created as a limited-time release to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario franchise, and Nintendo intended for it to be available only during that period.
What Does This New Update Do?

The newest update for Super Mario 3D All-Stars is specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2. According to Nintendo, the update fixes a few issues players experienced while playing the game on the new console. While the exact problems haven’t been detailed, the game should now run more smoothly, and this is actually the third update for Switch 2 this year.
So, it looks like we probably won’t be seeing any more updates for Super Mario 3D All-Stars. But honestly, it’s awesome that Nintendo prioritized making sure the game still runs great on the Switch 2 for those of us who already own it. Even though the game is likely staying off the eShop for good, the fact that they’ve continued to support it after all this time is really cool and I appreciate it.
