The film adaptation of James Gunn’s Superman is showing impressive box office performance and is on track to outshine one of Marvel’s 2025 releases in global earnings after merely two weeks. As per Deadline, the second weekend domestic gross for Superman is predicted to reach approximately $57 million, marking a 54% decrease from its opening week. This hold would be the most robust among this year’s significant comic book adaptations, surpassing the 68% and 56% second-weekend drops of Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, respectively. With the weekend approaching, Deadline forecasts that the worldwide total for Superman could approach around $400 million by Sunday.
(*Note: Thunderbolts is a fictional team in Marvel Comics, and as of my current knowledge, there is no confirmed film titled “Thunderbolts” scheduled for release in 2025.)
If Superman manages to surpass that milestone this weekend, it would have already exceeded Thunderbolts’ total earnings during its entire theatrical release, with Thunderbolts earning a global box office revenue of just $382 million and being deemed a financial disappointment. In due course, it is likely that Superman will surpass Brave New World’s lifetime gross, which amounted to $415.1 million.
In its initial release, the first full-length film of the fresh DC Universe series, titled “Superman,” had a robust debut. The film benefited from favorable reviews that highlighted the cast’s convincing performances and Gunn’s unique storytelling style. Consequently, it grossed $125 million within its opening weekend in the U.S., surpassing predictions. Although international sales could have been stronger, the success of “Superman” has generated excitement for upcoming projects within the DCU, including the enigmatic sequel to “Superman,” directed by Gunn.
Despite the ongoing success of DC Studios’ Superman, Marvel Studios has faced a challenging 2025 at the box office. The releases of Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts have been among the lowest-earning films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. However, there’s still hope for Marvel as The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to premiere next week. Predictions suggest that while it may not surpass Superman’s earnings, it’s expected to generate between $100-110 million domestically.
It’s terrific that Superman had a powerful start at the box office over the weekend, and it’s crucial for its success to sustain strong performance beyond the opening week. With Fantastic Four debuting next week, this past week provided an excellent chance for Superman to increase its earnings with limited rivalry. Fortunately, it maintained its performance well, and it’s on track to make a profit. Superman‘s reign at the top of the box office may conclude next week, but it’s likely to remain popular due to positive word of mouth. Audiences have been appreciating it, which has boosted ticket sales.
After the release of Superman, it appears the floodgates have been opened for the DC Universe, leaving fans eager to see what’s coming next. Upcoming releases like Supergirl and Clayface are set for next year, but fans can’t help but look beyond that. Since the release of Superman, there has been a flurry of news and speculation about potential projects such as a new Wonder Woman movie and when we might see more Justice League members in the DCU. It will be fascinating to observe how inspired DC Studios is by Superman’s performance, and if Gunn reveals a roadmap for future film plans soon. San Diego Comic-Con could be an excellent platform for such announcements, but Superman’s success came from the patience of Gunn and his team. Maintaining that balance should ensure future DCU projects are box office successes as well.
