Superman finally made his appearance, marking a fresh chapter in the DC movie world. The film was rich with significant nods to the past, paving the way for what’s to come. Among these references was the eagerly anticipated debut of Supergirl (Milly Alcock), who is Clark Kent’s relative from Krypton.
However, it’s curious as to why Supergirl appeared intoxicated during her brief appearance. This could potentially shed light on her character development and future role within the DC Universe.
Why Was Supergirl Drunk in Superman?
Superman subtly suggested the appearance of Supergirl when he mentioned Krypto to Lois Lane and described their relationship as “foster care.” This implied the presence of his cousin, Kara Zor-El.
In the closing scenes of the movie, Kara eventually appeared to snatch Krypto from Superman. She was noticeably intoxicated during this incident, and her actions provided an amusing sequence. However, her drunkenness wasn’t just for comedic purposes; it symbolized the emotional turmoil she experienced due to witnessing the demise of Krypton.
It seems that while I was taking care of Krypto back home, Supergirl, my cousin, was having a blast exploring alien worlds bathed in the glow of red suns – a unique environment where Kryptonians can indulge in intoxicating substances without their powers interfering. As Superman once shared with me, such celestial taverns are the only places where Kryptonians can truly let loose and experience a sense of intoxication, as on Earth, our bodies are too supercharged to feel it.
The reason Kara appears so intoxicated connects to her backstory as the Woman of Tomorrow. This is precisely the narrative arc that the forthcoming film will portray. In this tale, Kara remains behind and observes the annihilation of her homeland. Some Kryptonians survived in a suspended city fortified by a force field. However, most perished on the planet due to kryptonite contamination.
In the end, this city was obliterated by a barrage of meteors. Just prior to their demise, Kara’s father hastily sent her away. Consequently, Kara experienced profound emotional distress that she initially found difficult to cope with. This is why she now spends her days drinking and carousing on various other planets.
It’s likely that the forthcoming Supergirl film will delve deeper into her character and her past struggles.

We can expect the upcoming Supergirl movie to provide a more detailed look at her personality and her history of pain.
