Sydney Sweeney’s 4-Hour Netflix Series Is One Of Her Best

Although Sydney Sweeney has become well-known for her recent work, many fans still consider a lesser-known teen drama to be one of her strongest performances. The huge success of her thriller, The Housemaid, with over $401 million in box office revenue, confirms that Sydney Sweeney, who first gained attention on Euphoria, is now a major Hollywood star, despite some of her earlier roles not reaching a wide audience.

Despite a recent boxing film, Christy, losing money after its release, Sydney Sweeney quickly rebounded with the success of The Housemaid and the immediate announcement of a sequel. At just 28, Sweeney has already received praise for her work in shows like Sharp Objects, Euphoria, and The White Lotus, and she’s navigated unsuccessful films such as Eden, Madame Web, and Americana. Fortunately, movies like Immaculate, The Housemaid, and Anyone But You have proven to be box office hits for the young actress.

Despite being well-received by critics when it came out in 2018, one of Sydney Sweeney’s strongest performances is still surprisingly overlooked. The Netflix series Everything Sucks!, where Sweeney played the high schooler Emaline, was set in 1996 in the town of Boring, Oregon, and focused on the lives of local teenagers. Unfortunately, Netflix canceled the show after just one season, preventing it from reaching its full potential.

Everything Sucks! Is One of Netflix’s Best Teen Shows

Though it didn’t have quite the same sharp wit as some shows or the strong sense of nostalgia as others, Everything Sucks! was often compared to popular hits like Stranger Things and Freaks and Geeks. The show focused on the relatable struggles of its teenage characters in a small town. Featuring a talented cast including Jahi Di’Allo Winston and Peyton Kennedy, along with Sydney Sweeney, Everything Sucks! combined heartfelt moments with genuinely funny comedy, similar to the style of Netflix’s successful series Sex Education.

The show’s ’90s setting provided a great soundtrack, but Everything Sucks! was more than just a trip down memory lane. Characters like Emaline and Kate were well-developed, and Kate’s crush added both touching and humorous moments as the show explored what it’s like to grow up in a small town. Similar to Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This, Everything Sucks! used the story of a teenager discovering their sexuality to portray the broader feelings of loneliness and longing that many experience during adolescence.

Sydney Sweeney’s Breakout Role Remains Underrated Years Later

Like I Am Not Okay With This, Everything Sucks! was unfortunately canceled after just one season, despite telling a unique and heartfelt coming-of-age story. Though the ten episodes make for a great binge-watch, many viewers felt the show had much more story to tell. Since 2019, the stars have continued to work: Kennedy appeared in Pond Life and Grey’s Anatomy, while Winston starred in Netflix’s We Have A Ghost and Apple TV+’s Government Cheese.

Since the end of Everything Sucks!, Sydney Sweeney’s career has really taken off. While she’s received praise for both dramatic roles in Euphoria and comedies like Anyone But You, fans haven’t seen her successfully blend both genres quite like she did in Everything Sucks!. Her only other major dramedy role was in the 2019 film Big Time Adolescence, and considering the success of both that show and Everything Sucks!, many believe she’s due for a return to that style of show.
