A recent update from Paramount+ allows Taylor Sheridan to address the unexpected cast changes in The Madison after its debut in season two. This follows the return of the Dutton family with Luke Grimes’ Marshals on CBS in early March 2026. Shortly after, Montana will be introduced to the Clyburn family in The Madison, the newest addition to Sheridan’s expanding television universe.
Though it marked a significant shift in how stories were told, the series starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell quickly became a streaming hit. The show begins with the deaths of Preston (Russell) and Paul (Matthew Fox) in a helicopter crash, and the first season focuses on the immediate fallout. The first six episodes of The Madison conclude with Stacy (Pfeiffer) returning to Montana from New York City, fundamentally altering the future for her and her family. Paramount+ has confirmed a third season is in the works, with episodes already planned, even though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
The Madison Season 3’s Renewal Can Fix Paul’s Season 2 Absence
The show’s renewal for two more seasons is great news for fans. Beyond the overall success, this also allows creator Taylor Sheridan to address the departure of actor Terry O’Quinn, who played Paul, before the start of season two. O’Quinn announced he wouldn’t return after the first season, as he didn’t want to commit several years to a single project. It seems he felt Paul’s story had run its course after season one.
I was bummed to hear Preston’s brother won’t be in all of season 2 of The Madison, but the good news is the show’s been renewed for a third season! That means there’s still a chance we could see him back somehow. Apparently, he wasn’t ready to commit to the show long-term, which I totally get. Hopefully, taking a break this season will make him excited about coming back for season 3. Because the show jumps around with its storytelling, it shouldn’t be hard to explain where he’s been and bring him back into the mix when the time is right.
Why The Madison Still Needs Paul (Despite Not Being Part Of The Main Family)
The first season of The Madison understandably centered on Stacy’s grief following the death of her husband. This naturally connected to her children’s struggles with loss, as they were also facing their own challenges. However, a subtler aspect of the show is how Taylor Sheridan mirrored Stacy’s experience with the tragic pasts of Preston and his brother Paul. We learn Paul is still deeply affected by the death of his wife in a car accident. This often-missed connection adds another layer to The Madison and could enrich its themes of family, lasting love, and the impact of grief.
Although Paul wasn’t a core member of the Clyburn family in The Madison, his connection to Preston is key to understanding both Preston’s character and his deep love for Montana. It would have been interesting to see more of their relationship, as well as how Stacy interacted with her brother-in-law. Learning about Preston’s past naturally sheds light on his connection with Paul. However, season 2 of The Madison could prioritize Stacy and her daughters, and then explore this backstory later in season 3.
