Taylor Sheridan’s 8-Part Historical Series Is His Most Important Western Yet

As a longtime fan of Taylor Sheridan’s work, I can confidently say his new eight-episode series is his most compelling Western yet. It feels like he’s really building something special with his expanding TV universe – a collection of stories spanning different locations and even branching into different genres. It’s exciting to see where he takes things next!

Almost everything he’s created falls into the Western genre, which is where he feels most at home. His strongest work, and the most significant projects of his career, are consistently those firmly rooted in classic Western themes.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a Western miniseries from 2023 that tells the story of Bass Reeves, a legendary African American Deputy U.S. Marshal, portrayed by David Oyelowo. Though credited as an executive producer, Taylor Sheridan played a major role in making the eight-episode series.

Originally conceived in 2021 as a continuation of Taylor Sheridan’s series 1883, the show eventually became independent from the Yellowstone franchise, with Chad Feehan taking the lead as showrunner. The story centers on Reeves, a federal officer working in the area around Fort Smith, Arkansas, known as “Indian Territory,” as he tracks down and arrests dangerous outlaws who are trying to evade the law there.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves Is Taylor Sheridan’s Only Show Based On A Real Person

Taylor Sheridan loves Westerns, but he doesn’t usually base his stories on actual people or events. While he’s inspired by history – for example, his portrayal of Native American boarding schools in 1923 – and sometimes includes historical figures, like Tom Hanks as General George Meade in 1883, his focus isn’t strict historical accuracy.

Taylor Sheridan hadn’t previously focused a show solely on the life of a real person, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves marks a first for him. The series draws heavily from the Bass Reeves novels by historical fiction author Sidney Thompson. While the novels contain fictional elements, they’re based on the true story of the legendary lawman.

I’m fascinated by the story of Bass Reeves! This guy was a U.S. Marshal way back in the 1800s, and the tales about him are incredible. They say he made around 3,000 arrests and never even got hurt while doing it! What’s even more amazing is his background – he was born into slavery, but escaped and found refuge in what’s now Oklahoma. He learned the land, picked up the local languages, and became a skilled hunter and tracker. All those skills ended up being perfect for his career as a lawman – a truly remarkable life story.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves Is Driven By David Oyelowo’s Powerful Performance As The Lead Character

It’s interesting that some of Taylor Sheridan’s strongest work centers around real people and events. His shows, like Yellowstone and Lioness, sometimes start to feel overly dramatic as the seasons progress, with characters seemingly making poor choices just to move the plot forward.

The series Lawmen: Bass Reeves relies on a compelling true story, rather than needing fictional embellishments. Much of its success is due to David Oyelowo’s brilliant portrayal of Bass Reeves. He embodies the character perfectly, convincingly presenting a strong and capable lawman who could realistically capture so many outlaws, whether on foot or horseback.

David Oyelowo portrays Bass Reeves with both gentleness and a kingly presence. The series Lawmen: Bass Reeves delves into a complex racial history, and Oyelowo skillfully conveys the difficult position of a man who was formerly enslaved but now enforces the law within that same system.
