As a huge TV fan, I’m constantly amazed by Taylor Sheridan. Even though Yellowstone is finished, he’s still absolutely everywhere! Right now, I’m hooked on the second season of Landman – it’s a fantastic show with Billy Bob Thornton, and people are saying it’s even better than season one. Plus, Tulsa King just finished its third season and they’re already planning a spin-off with Samuel L. Jackson! But honestly, that’s just scratching the surface. He recently signed a massive deal with NBC, which means we’re going to be getting a ton more content from him for years to come, and I, for one, am thrilled!
Even though Sheridan appears to be trying to move on from the Dutton family and Montana, he’s still involved in the Yellowstone world. Several spinoffs are planned, including one focused on Beth and Rip’s new ranch. However, the show featuring Kayce Dutton, called Y: Marshals, is further along in development. Unfortunately, this newest project is reversing a key plot point that originally improved a disappointing outcome.
Yellowstone Rushes to the Finish Line

The last season of Yellowstone follows a familiar pattern: a company tries to seize the Dutton ranch for financial gain. This time, however, John Dutton is killed, leaving his daughter, Beth, and son, Kayce, to defend the family’s land. They suspect their brother, Jamie, is behind the attack, but his powerful connections make it seem like a hopeless fight. Just when things look bleak, Kayce devises a clever plan to protect his father’s legacy and stop Jamie from succeeding.
Kayce sells the ranch to Thomas Rainwater, the leader of the Broken Rock Reservation, ensuring its protection. He only asks to keep a small portion of the land so he can provide for his family without returning to law enforcement. While the arrangement seems a bit too easy, it aligns with Kayce’s desire for a peaceful life, especially since he’s been trying to escape violence. However, that peace won’t last, as he’s quickly pulled back into conflict.
Y: Marshals Is Kicking Dirt on Yellowstone‘s Grave

With only so much interest for shows about families and ranch life, Kayce is making some concessions to launch his own series. In Y: Marshals, he’ll be working with U.S. Marshals in Montana, tracking down dangerous criminals like drug dealers and murderers. While he’ll be bringing criminals to justice, this demanding job will likely create challenges for his family life, especially since he’s repeatedly emphasized how important it is for him to be home with Monica and Tate to be content.
Perhaps the show will offer a good reason for Kayce breaking his promise. However, the real issue seems to be that the showrunners don’t find his character compelling unless he’s involved in action. While that might be true, some characters deserve a peaceful ending, particularly after making so many sacrifices.
Y: Marshals starts airing on CBS on March 1, 2026.
