Taylor Sheridan’s show, Lioness, is coming back for a third season, and it’s proven to be a strong series since its debut a couple of years ago. With Lioness (sometimes called Special Ops: Lioness), Sheridan moved away from the Western themes he’s known for and explored new territory in television.
Featuring Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, and Nicole Kidman, along with a talented supporting cast, Lioness feels like a classic Taylor Sheridan series, but it also manages to be uniquely captivating. With several Sheridan shows already available, Lioness is arguably the most promising one yet.
What Is Lioness About?
The show Lioness debuted on Paramount+ in 2023, and its second season came out in 2024. It’s a spy thriller centered around Joe McNamara (played by Saldaña), a top CIA officer. Joe leads the ‘Lioness’ program, a secret team of female operatives working undercover to combat terrorism.
During the first season, Joe brings Cruz Manuelos (De Oliveira) onto her team and starts preparing her for a dangerous undercover operation. Nicole Kidman plays Kaitlyn Meade, Joe’s supervisor, and directs the team—known as the Lionesses—in season two as they go undercover to take down a drug cartel. Throughout their work, the Lionesses also grapple with the difficult ethical questions their jobs present.
How Lioness Is Different From Taylor Sheridan’s Other Shows
Compared to Taylor Sheridan’s other work, Lioness stands out. It’s unique in that it’s the only series he’s created with a mostly female cast. Sheridan has often been criticized for not developing his female characters as strongly as his male ones, and Lioness seems to be his response to that critique.
What sets this show apart is that it actually seems to be getting better as it goes on. Often, shows created by Taylor Sheridan start strong but lose steam in later seasons. However, Lioness has noticeably improved from its first to second season, and there’s a good chance the third season will be even stronger.
Lioness Season 3 Will Be The Most Ambitious Yet
A third season of Lioness was officially confirmed in August 2025. Filming is expected to finish around March or April 2026, suggesting the new season might arrive shortly after that. Although details about the plot are still unknown, James Jordan, who stars in the series, recently shared a promising hint.
The actor from ‘Two Cups’ says season 3 will be much larger in scope than previous seasons. They point out that season 2 was a big improvement over season 1, so season 3 is aiming even higher. It’s also good news that most of the original cast will be back for season 3 of ‘Lioness’.
