Its third season was slow-paced, and the first movie wasn’t well-received, which diminished some of the excitement around the show. Now, the main character, Rimuru Tempest, is trying to regain fans with the release of both Season 4 and a new movie, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea.

This latest film fits into the series’ history in a complex way, much like the original release. It’s structured like a separate adventure, similar to Scarlet Bond, but it’s also connected to Season 4, which should appeal to longtime viewers.

After a busy period establishing the Demon Kingdom Tempest, Rimuru and his friends decide they deserve a vacation. They’re invited to the exclusive island resort of Elmesia by the ruler of the Magi Dynasty, Salion. However, their relaxing getaway quickly turns into something far from peaceful.

If you’re looking for a fun anime movie purely for enjoyment, especially if you’re already a fan, Tears of the Azure Sea delivers. However, don’t expect it to be a thought-provoking or deeply meaningful film – it’s best enjoyed as light entertainment.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’s New Movie Has Some of the Series’ Most Impressive Action Scenes

Right from the start, Tears of the Azure Sea immediately tries to grab your attention. The very first scene features some of the most captivating moments in the whole film, and it introduces a new character named Yura.

The movie’s action sequences and animation are excellent. It smartly focuses impressive visuals on key moments, creating some of the most beautiful scenes seen in the series so far. It features both realistic close-quarters combat and spectacular magical attacks, perfectly showcasing Rimuru’s power as a Demon Lord.

I’m really enjoying the animation, but I’ve noticed something a little odd with the special effects. When they showcase Rimuru’s incredible powers – like Raphael appearing or a big magical blast – it looks amazing and really sells the idea of something otherworldly. However, when those same effects are used for things like explosions or natural disasters in the background, it feels a bit out of place and doesn’t quite mesh with the rest of the art style. It’s like the effects are so high-tech they distract from the world itself!

Tears of the Azure Sea’s Characters Are Where the Movie Shines

Yura, the second main character in Tears of the Azure Sea, is an intriguing figure with a lot of hidden depths. However, her story follows a very predictable pattern. She’s the typical strong, independent heroine who turns out to have a surprising secret. While this fits the movie’s themes, it felt like Yura’s character could have been more unique and developed.

However, the main character’s story is closely connected to Gobta’s, and he really steals the show. Their connection with Yura is sweet, though it follows a very familiar “Beauty and the Beast” trope.

The film touches on some interesting ideas related to the series’ themes, but they’re overshadowed by predictable plot points and clichés. It feels like a very simplified version of a classic Disney fairytale, but it doesn’t commit to the emotional weight that makes those stories work. By the time the villain reveals their motives, the scene feels awkward and forced.

Honestly, the story felt pretty standard overall, but the ending – the romance – really stood out. It felt almost copied from a hugely popular movie from last year, which was a bit strange and the only truly noticeable thing about it.

What truly saves the story are its characters, which have always been a highlight of TenSura. The show’s familiar humor still works well, thanks to the engaging personalities of the main characters.

Sadly, not all of the characters get enough screen time. Benimaru, Hakuro, and Soei feel almost like background figures, with limited impact on the story. They participate in the fight scenes, but quickly fade back into obscurity. This might be a worthwhile trade-off, though, as it allows Gobta to have a significant and meaningful character arc.

Sea of Azure is a Notable Step Up From TenSura’s First Feature Film, But Not Much More Than That

Don’t leave the theater right after Tears of the Azure Sea ends! A quick scene after the credits hints at a major plot point coming in Season 4, and you won’t want to spoil it for yourself.

This movie is really made for dedicated fans of the series. It’s enjoyable and does a good job of portraying the characters people already love from TenSura. However, it doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking or have the kind of impact that something like the Reze Arc in Chainsaw Man did, nor does it push the boundaries of animation in a new direction.

While Tears of the Azure Sea tries harder to appeal to a broader audience than the previous film, Scarlet Bond, it mostly succeeds on that front and doesn’t aim for much beyond it. Dedicated TenSura fans will likely enjoy it, and even their friends might not mind seeing it with them. However, when viewed as a standalone movie, it doesn’t offer a lot to praise.

Watching That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea is enjoyable, but it doesn’t offer anything truly memorable. It’s a pleasant way to unwind – like taking a day off – but it won’t leave a lasting impression.
