The 10 Best Avengers Stories In Marvel History

Since 1963, the Avengers have consistently lived up to their reputation as “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.” While DC Comics had previously combined their heroes into one book, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby found a fresh and successful way to do the same with Marvel’s characters. Over the years, many of the most talented comic book creators have contributed to the Avengers, delivering incredible action-packed stories. After becoming a blockbuster movie franchise, the team solidified its place as the world’s most popular group of heroes, proving the enduring appeal of the concept.

The Avengers have consistently been a top-selling superhero team, with stories ranging from excellent to truly memorable. Over the years, Marvel has published many fantastic tales, and the Avengers have been at the heart of some of the very best. Here are ten Avengers stories considered the greatest in Marvel history – a collection packed with incredible superhero action.

10) “The Kang Dynasty”

The early 2000s featured many great Avengers comics, but the standout story was “The Kang Dynasty” by Kurt Busiek, Alan Davis, and Kieron Dwyer. It was a fantastic conclusion to Busiek’s run, bringing back one of the Avengers’ most dangerous foes with a plan for world domination. Kang actually wins, becoming the world’s ruler, and the Avengers are the only ones who can stop him. This story perfectly showcases why Kang is such a compelling villain and is everything you’d want in an Avengers epic – full of action, smart writing, and stunning artwork.

9) Uncanny Avengers (Vol. 1) #6-22

The early 2010s were a strong era for the Avengers, particularly following the Avengers vs. X-Men event. A new team, the Avengers Unity Squad, debuted in Uncanny Avengers and faced a massive threat in issues #6-22, crafted by the talented team of Rick Remender, Daniel Acuna, Adam Kubert, and Steve McNiven. Kang unleashed the powerful Apocalypse Twins hoping to conquer the world and defeat the Avengers, but the Twins had their own agenda. The Unity Squad had to overcome immense obstacles, but their biggest struggle wasn’t the villains – it was internal division. This epic story unfolds across three arcs, delivering breathtaking action and a grand scale. With compelling writing and stunning artwork, it’s a truly unforgettable adventure.

8) Avengers: Twilight

Avengers: Twilight delivers a compelling Avengers story set in a future where the team has been disbanded and outlawed following a devastating attack by their enemies on ‘H-Day.’ As the government becomes increasingly authoritarian, Captain America joins forces with Luke Cage to fight back, believing the Avengers are the key to victory. However, the plans of Iron Man and the Wasp’s son, along with a surprising relative of the Avengers’ butler Jarvis, could unleash the world’s greatest threat. Writer Chip Zdarsky skillfully weaves in current political themes, creating a superhero saga that feels remarkably relevant. Daniel Acuna’s artwork is stunning, evoking a similar atmosphere to the classic Kingdom Come.

7) Avengers Forever (Vol. 1)

Kurt Busiek, Roger Stern, and Carlos Pacheco’s Avengers Forever is a must-read for any Avengers enthusiast. The story brings together a unique team – including classic heroes like Captain America (from the 1970s) and Giant-Man alongside future Avengers like Captain Marvel III and Songbird. They team up with characters like Hank Pym as Yellowjacket and a Hawkeye sporting a distinctive look, along with the villain Libra and the Supreme Intelligence, to thwart the plans of Immortus and Those Who Remain. The result is a time-bending adventure featuring Kang, delivering an epic experience unlike any other Avengers story. Avengers Forever cleverly addresses inconsistencies in Avengers history while providing a compelling narrative. Carlos Pacheco’s artwork is exceptional, perfectly capturing the grand scale of the story with dynamic action and impressive character designs. It’s a complete package that consistently delivers a powerful impact.

6) “Time Runs Out”

“Time Runs Out” wraps up Jonathan Hickman’s run on Avengers and New Avengers. The world now knows about the dangerous Incursions – events that threaten to destroy realities – and the secret actions the Illuminati took to prevent them. While one team of Avengers pursues the Illuminati, another tries to discover the root cause of the Incursions and stop them before it’s too late. Meanwhile, Doctor Doom is working on his own plan to save everything. This epic story features incredible artwork from a team of artists, including Mike Deodato and Stefano Caselli, delivering non-stop action and adventure. While it helps to have read the previous Avengers and New Avengers issues to fully understand the plot, it’s still a truly impressive story.

5) “The Korvac Saga”

Considered one of the best Avengers stories from the 1970s and 80s, “The Korvac Saga” features the character Michael Korvac, a man from the future who becomes incredibly powerful. After escaping to the present day, he’s pursued by the Guardians of the Galaxy, who then join forces with the Avengers to stop him. The resulting battles are among the most iconic in Marvel history, created by a team of legendary artists and writers. It’s a classic example of the Avengers at their best, delivering a truly surprising and unforgettable story.

4) “Under Siege”

Roger Stern and John Buscema’s “Under Siege” is considered a high point for the Avengers, and for good reason – both creators were at the top of their game. The story sees Baron Zemo assembling a super-powered team of the Masters of Evil to finally defeat the Avengers by attacking their headquarters. Though caught off guard and suffering heavy losses, the Avengers fight back with everything they have to reclaim their home and save their teammates. This comic truly captures the spirit of the ’80s Avengers, filled with incredible moments thanks to Stern’s writing. John Buscema’s artwork is stunning – he’s a legendary action artist (his work on titles like Conan the Barbarian and Wolverine is fantastic), and this story provides him with plenty of dynamic scenes to illustrate. It’s a classic Avengers story that’s sure to impress.

3) “The Kree/Skrull War”

Roy Thomas became the writer of Avengers after Stan Lee and is largely credited with shaping the team into what fans love today. He crafted “The Kree/Skrull War,” a groundbreaking story featuring art by Neal Adams, Sal Buscema, and John Buscema, which redefined the Avengers. This epic plunged Earth into a millennia-old conflict between two alien empires, with the Avengers as the planet’s only defense. It demonstrated the team’s potential for truly large-scale adventures and marked their first major, sweeping storyline. Thomas’s writing shines, and the art team provided a fresh, modern aesthetic rarely seen in comics of that era.

2) “Avengers World”

Jonathan Hickman’s work on Avengers got off to a phenomenal start. The first three issues, beautifully illustrated by Jerome Opena, depict a Martian attack that quickly overwhelms Earth’s heroes, leaving only Captain America alive. He then initiates a powerful emergency plan – the Avengers Machine, designed by Iron Man and himself – assembling a new, incredibly strong team of Avengers. The resulting battle is a classic Marvel team-up, and the story is truly captivating from beginning to end. It’s an epic that combines stunning artwork with some of the best Avengers writing ever, making it a story you’ll want to revisit again and again.

1) “Ultron Unlimited”

As a huge Avengers fan, I always go back to the run Kurt Busiek and George Perez did together, starting in 1998. They really delivered some of the best Avengers comics of the nineties – honestly, almost every issue is a winner. But one story truly stands out: “Ultron Unlimited.” It sees Ultron, arguably the Avengers’ biggest foe, come back with a massive army of drones covered in adamantium, determined to destroy all of humanity. It’s a fantastic combination of writing and art, a truly action-packed story with incredibly high stakes that kept me completely hooked. In my opinion, it’s the best Avengers story ever told – which is a shame it’s so hard to find these days! Any true Avengers fan needs to read it if they haven’t.
