From the inception of X-Men in Marvel Comics, their main adversaries have consistently been the members of the Brotherhood of Mutant Evildoers. This is evidently a clash of ideologies. Professor Charles Xavier established his institute and the X-Men with the goal of safeguarding humanity, fostering an alliance between mutants and humans that promotes peace. On the other hand, Magneto, who endured a harrowing childhood in a Nazi concentration camp, witnessed firsthand the hatred humans harbor towards those who are different. As a result, he created his Brotherhood of Mutant Supremacists to protect mutants by force, understanding that preemptive action was crucial for survival against humans.
Over the course of different periods and various incarnations of both the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the strength of their mutant abilities has varied greatly. Here’s a list of some of the most potent members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in Marvel Comics lore, spanning from Magneto’s leadership to subsequent iterations of the group.
10) Pyro
In simpler terms, Pyro is a powerful mutant character introduced in Marvel Comics as part of the villainous Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. He joined this group during Mystique’s leadership, and was involved in an attempt on the life of anti-mutant presidential candidate Robert Kelly that led to the creation of the “Days of Future Past” timeline. Unlike his movie counterpart, Pyro was not a teenager but rather an adult at the time. He possesses incredible abilities to control fire, allowing him to shape it into various forms and intensities as he desires for use as weapons – such as enormous claws or avian creatures resembling a phoenix. However, his powers have a limitation in that he can only manipulate existing fires and cannot generate them himself, making fire availability crucial for him.
9) Mystique
Mystique is an influential member of the Brotherhood of Malevolent Mutants not just for her physical prowess, but primarily due to her cunning intellect and deceitful character. Her unique ability enables her to transform into any individual she desires, even adopting their physical attributes such as male sexual characteristics when assuming a male persona. However, Mystique is also strategically astute, and her leadership of the Brotherhood triggered the timeline events depicted in “Days of Future Past,” as it was her instigation that led to the assassination attempt on presidential candidate Robert Kelly. Furthermore, when teamed with Destiny, their alliance becomes formidable due to Destiny’s precognitive abilities.
8) Sabretooth
Sabretooth belongs to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants primarily due to his immense power and lack of morals. His strength is such that he uses it annually, on Wolverine’s birthday, to viciously attack Logan, almost killing him every time. It’s only on rare occasions that Wolverine manages to withstand Sabretooth. With abilities similar to Wolverine’s, but surpassing him in strength and without any sense of morality regarding taking lives, Sabretooth is considered exceptionally wicked. He was one of the few mutants who couldn’t adapt on Krakoa and was exiled to its deepest depths.
7) Mastermind
Jason Wyngarde, one of the founding members of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and a prominent figure within the Hellfire Club, possesses the ability to craft potent illusions that manipulate the realities and perceptions of those influenced. During his tenure with the Brotherhood, he was a formidable force, often contributing significantly to battles against the X-Men. Mastermind’s cunning telepathy even allowed him to rewrite Polaris’ memories, obscuring her true parentage (she is Magneto’s child). However, his most substantial demonstration of power occurred within the Hellfire Club when he utilized his powers to psychologically shatter Jean Grey, an event that triggered the emergence of the Dark Phoenix.
6) Blob
As a devoted movie buff, I’d say there aren’t many characters who can rival The Blob’s raw power when he plants his feet firmly on the ground – it was no surprise he was Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants’ first recruit back in the X-Men comics. However, when the X-Men came calling, he turned them down, leading to a bitter rivalry. Professor X even went so far as to erase his memories of the X-Men, but once he figured out what happened, it solidified our mutual enmity.
The Blob’s powers involve generating immense gravity, which makes him almost immovable while in contact with the ground. Adding to that, he’s remarkably resistant to injuries and his size translates into superhuman strength. Yet, a mutant like Jean Grey can disrupt the ground beneath him, allowing other mutants to knock him off balance – although they won’t manage to inflict much harm once they do so.
5) Dark Beast
In a different universe, Hank McCoy is known as Dark Beast instead of the Beast we’re familiar with from Earth-616. This alternate version of McCoy gained notoriety during the X-Men event called “Age of Apocalypse.” Unlike his counterpart who was guided by Professor X, Dark Beast didn’t have that moral instruction, leading him to misuse his scientific abilities for ill purposes and becoming one of Apocalypse’s key allies. While the Beast from Earth-616 displayed potential for evil as well, Dark Beast took it a step further, becoming the most chaotic and destructive manifestation of Hank McCoy in Marvel Comics. During a period when Havok led the Brotherhood, Dark Beast joined their ranks.
4) Quicksilver
In the early days, Quicksilver was among the founding members of the Brotherhood of Sinister Mutants. Initially, he was simply recognized as a team member, but later it was unveiled that he was Magneto’s son. As the story progressed, both Quicksilver and his sister Scarlet Witch grew weary of their father’s manipulations and decided to break away, joining forces with the Avengers instead.
Quicksilver possesses an extraordinary ability to move at superhuman speeds. Initially, he could sprint at approximately 175 miles per hour while part of the Brotherhood, maintaining this pace for roughly four hours. Following exposure to Isotope E, his speed has no upper limit now. He’s been recorded running at Mach 5 (3,800 mph) and traversing half the Earth’s distance in just 92 seconds.
3) Rogue
Initially, Rogue was portrayed as a villain in Marvel Comics, having been raised by Mystique and Destiny. Working alongside her adoptive family, she was a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. One of her notable actions was stealing Carol Danvers’ powers and memories, leaving a profound impact on the future Captain Marvel. This eventual encounter led Rogue to seek aid from the X-Men, hoping to learn how to control her powers and lead a more virtuous life.
Rogue’s unique mutant abilities enable her to absorb the life energy and thoughts of any individual she comes into contact with. However, prolonged contact can potentially be lethal. Additionally, she demonstrates superhuman strength and the ability to fly, as she retained certain powers from Carol Danvers that have significantly increased her power level.
2) Magneto
Magneto, a powerful mutant, established the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants as he believed peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans was unattainable due to human prejudice and hostility. Originally friends with Charles Xavier, their ideologies diverged; while Xavier sought harmony, Magneto took action against potential human aggression towards mutants. Endowed with the ability to control magnetism at an Omega-level, Magneto is frequently labeled the most powerful being on Earth, though the extent of his powers are beyond measurement. He has demonstrated terrifying feats such as dismantling Wolverine’s skeleton and causing catastrophic damage to the Earth’s core in another reality, leading to widespread destruction, flooding, and loss of life.
1) Scarlet Witch
Although Magneto may be thought of as the most potent entity on Earth, the Scarlet Witch has demonstrated numerous instances where she outshines in terms of danger. Initially joining the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with magical abilities, she soon evolved into something far greater. Her command over chaos magic has been employed frequently to inflict destruction, due to her precarious mental state. She single-handedly restructured the entire world in the storyline “House of M“. She deprived millions of mutants of their powers with just three words in “M Day“. She was responsible for the deaths of three Avengers and Agatha Harkness in “Avengers Disassembled.“. Her power and danger are so immense that both the Avengers and X-Men contemplated terminating her to prevent any further harm to the world.
