May the Fourth be with you! Hulu is joining the Star Wars Day fun by adding four classic Star Wars films to its streaming library in May. With exciting new shows like The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi on the horizon, it’s a great time to revisit the galaxy far, far away.
Starting May 1st, Hulu will add the original Star Wars trilogy – A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi – along with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to its streaming library. The original trilogy follows Luke Skywalker’s journey as he joins the Rebel Alliance to fight against the evil Galactic Empire, learns about the Force, and tries to save his father, Darth Vader, ultimately hoping to bring peace to the galaxy. Rogue One, released in 2016, tells the story of how the Rebel Alliance obtained the plans for the Death Star, acting as a prequel to the opening scenes of A New Hope and expanding on the events between Revenge of the Sith and the 1977 film.
The Original Star Wars Trilogy and Rogue One Are the Pinnacle of the Star Wars Franchise
If you had to pick just four Star Wars films to watch, the original trilogy (Episodes IV-VI) and Rogue One would be an excellent choice. These four movies are consistently ranked among the best in the franchise – A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back actually hold the top two spots on Rotten Tomatoes. They also tell the most connected and compelling story so far. Watching them together feels like experiencing one long, exciting military adventure, blending realistic war themes with the grand, imaginative space opera that began with A New Hope.
Even though it was released almost 40 years after the first Star Wars movie, Rogue One seamlessly fits into the original story. It brilliantly explained how the rebels got the plans for the Death Star—a question fans had wondered about for decades—and showed the difficult choices and moral compromises made during the early days of the Rebellion. The film also successfully captured the same realistic, lived-in feel as the original trilogy, with its familiar technology and worn-down look. Together, these four movies tell a powerful, suspenseful story that emphasizes the sacrifices required to fight for freedom.
What’s New on Hulu?
Even though four Star Wars films are coming to Hulu soon, there’s still plenty to watch right now thanks to all the new movies added in April. Currently, Hulu subscribers can enjoy films like The Day After Tomorrow, The Devil Wears Prada, and Primitive War. Next month, look out for The Last Duel and Sicario arriving on May 1st, Alien: Romulus on May 21st, and Afraid on May 28th.
