Luke Skywalker has always been the main character of the Star Wars saga. While the original A New Hope featured many memorable characters like Leia, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the villain Darth Vader, Luke consistently felt like the hero at the heart of the story. Even when the prequels explored Anakin Skywalker’s past, Luke remained a central figure, and the sequels continued to emphasize his importance, though some fans didn’t appreciate how this was handled.
With Luke Skywalker’s death in The Last Jedi and the slim chance of recasting the character, the Star Wars universe is likely moving away from Luke and the Skywalker family as a whole. While Luke is irreplaceable, the franchise has already begun introducing new characters to take his place. Here are five characters poised to fill that role.
Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter Character

The next Star Wars film, titled Starfighter, came as a surprise announcement. While director Shawn Levy was already known to be developing a Star Wars movie, and rumors circulated about Ryan Gosling potentially being involved, most fans didn’t realize these projects were connected. It’s especially unexpected that Starfighter will be released before the previously anticipated film focusing on Rey, currently believed to be called New Jedi Order.
Details about the new Star Wars movie are still scarce, but Ryan Gosling will play the main starfighter. It appears Disney is introducing this character as a new leader to launch a fresh era of Star Wars stories, taking place after The Rise of Skywalker. Many believe this character will fill the role previously held by Luke Skywalker, and with Gosling starring, the movie seems destined to be a hit with fans.
Wim

Released in 2024, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew felt somewhat overlooked. What was nice about the show was that it wasn’t tied to the main Skywalker story, and it had a lighthearted, 80s-inspired vibe. The series followed a charming group of kids, including a boy named Wim, who, like Luke Skywalker in A New Hope, dreamed of leaving his ordinary home and exploring the galaxy.
Wim doesn’t appear to be strong with the Force, and he even has trouble wielding a lightsaber. However, he clearly fills the role Luke Skywalker once did, sharing Luke’s longing for adventure and being portrayed as an optimistic leader and hero. It’s uncertain if Wim will return, as a second season of Skeleton Crew hasn’t been officially announced, though rumors suggest it’s possible.
Din Djarin

Although Din Djarin is a Mandalorian, not a Jedi, he’s taken on a role similar to Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars universe. This is especially clear with the upcoming movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be the first Star Wars film released in theaters in almost seven years, highlighting Din Djarin’s importance to the franchise.
Din Djarin’s journey in The Mandalorian mirrors Luke Skywalker’s in many ways. He’s now involved with the New Republic and will likely confront a significant challenge. This suggests Din and Grogu could become new central heroes in the Star Wars saga, stepping up to fill the void left by Luke’s departure.
Ezra Bridger

Ezra Bridger, first appearing in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, is another character who could fill the role Luke Skywalker once held. He began as a resourceful and rebellious teenager, learning to survive on his own during a difficult period. As Rebels progressed, he matured into a more focused Jedi, trained by his master, Kanan Jarrus. This growth already suggests Ezra could be a successor to Luke, following a similar path.
As a huge fan, I was so thrilled to see Ezra return in Ahsoka – and I’m even more excited he’ll be back for season 2! It really feels like he’s becoming a central figure in the future of Star Wars, and honestly, I think he’s perfectly positioned to fill the role Luke Skywalker once had. Especially considering how few Jedi there are during this time, Ezra is incredibly important.
Rey

Rey is the natural successor to Luke Skywalker, and she has the greatest potential to lead Star Wars into the future. The sequel trilogy clearly established her as his replacement, and after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, she’s the most likely character to carry the franchise forward.
The biggest doubt surrounding Rey’s future as a Jedi comes from the lack of news about her planned movie, New Jedi Order. Though it was officially announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, we haven’t heard much since, leading many to wonder if the film will actually be made. Despite this uncertainty, everything we know so far suggests that Star Wars intends for Rey to carry on Luke Skywalker’s legacy, in whatever way possible.
