Okay, so I’m super excited because The Alters is getting a big expansion called Last Variable next month on PS5! It’s not just a little update either – we’re talking over 20 hours of completely new stuff to play. That’s awesome!
So, this new DLC puts you in the shoes of an old scientist who stuck around on the planet for some seriously important research. Basically, it’s all about building an underground base and using new tools to completely change the landscape. I’m talking about turning barren areas into these awesome, thriving little paradises – it really changes how the game plays, focusing on terraforming and making the planet bloom!
I checked How Long to Beat, and it says the main story of The Alters takes around 20 hours to finish. So, when the developers at 11 Bit Studios say this new expansion is about the same length, that sounds like a big addition to the game. Developer estimates aren’t always spot-on, but it looks like Last Variable is going to give us a lot of extra gameplay!
It’s out for PS5 on 13th July 2026.
The exact price isn’t available yet, but the expansion will be included with the Deluxe Edition of the game. Typically, the Deluxe Edition costs £11 or $15 more than the standard game on the PS Store, so we anticipate the expansion will fall within that price range. If you already own the base game, The Alters, you can currently upgrade to the Deluxe Edition for a discounted price of £6.59 or $8.24 with a PS Plus membership.
Last Variable doesn’t drastically change the experience we already loved in The Alters when it first came out last year. We originally gave the game an 8/10, praising it as a tense, exciting, and thought-provoking game that really makes you consider your own values.
