As an enthusiastic supporter, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of 11 bit studios’ masterpiece, “The Alter.” Finally, on June 13th, it graced Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC screens to a chorus of favorable critical acclaim. But what about its commercial success? The developer themselves have shared some exciting news in a recent tweet – over 280,000 copies sold across all platforms, and a staggering million wishlists on Steam!
Compared to Frostpunk 2, The Alters had significantly lower sales figures, selling fewer than 350,000 copies in just a week. However, it’s important to remember that the Frostpunk franchise has been around longer and enjoys a larger fanbase, which could account for this difference. As for whether Frostpunk 2 managed to recover its development costs, we’ll have to wait and see, so keep an eye out for further updates.
To delve deeper into the intriguing concept of “The Alters“, take a look at our comprehensive review. We awarded it an impressive 8 out of 10, commending its unique premise – that of Jan Dolski stranded on a hostile planet and compelled to generate alternate versions of himself to endure – as well as the graphics. Although certain gameplay aspects such as resource-collection might not appeal to all, the narrative and decision-making more than compensate for this.
In spite of receiving praise, The Alters has not been free from debate as players uncovered that some in-game text and localization were generated by AI. For a full response from 11 bit Studios on this matter, click here.
280K copies of #TheAlters sold across all platforms and 1M wishlists on Steam! It’s hard to put into words what that means to us.
The fact that so many of you chose to step into Jan’s world – feel it, reflect on it, share it- means everything. Thank you for playing 🙏💜— The Alters | OUT NOW 🐑 (@altersgame) July 8, 2025
