Season 3 of The Apothecary Diaries is coming in a few months, split into two parts. The first part will premiere in October 2026, and will follow Maomao and Jinshi as they try to figure out what’s causing problems in some northern farming villages. Last March, a side story manga called The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan’s Story was released. Written by the original author, Natsu Hyuuga, and illustrated by Itsuki Nanao and Toko Shino, it retells the main story from the perspective of Xiaolan, a servant and close friend of Maomao, and also explores her backstory.
I’m so excited about this character! Even though she doesn’t have a huge role in the main story, she’s become incredibly popular since the anime came out. And the best news? Square Enix’s Manga Up started releasing her own spin-off story in English back in July 2025, and it’s been ongoing ever since! According to Anime News Network, Square Enix is even giving her story a full English print release – Volume 1 is coming out this October! We don’t have a specific date just yet, but I’m already counting down the days!
What Is The Plot of The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan’s Story?
Xiaolan and Maomao became friends after Maomao was taken to the palace. From the very first episode, Xiaolan noticed Maomao was well-educated, even though Maomao initially tried to hide it. After finishing her time at the Rear Palace in the second season, Maomao helped Xiaolan find a new position by introducing her to a Concubine.
Because the main story doesn’t explore her background much, a side manga reveals more about who she is. The first chapter explains the sad events that led her to the palace and why she likely can’t go back home.
What to Expect From The Apothecary Diaries Season 3
Season 3 will follow the growing relationship between Jinshi and Maomao as they continue to work together. With the Shi Clan’s rebellion now over, a new phase begins for Maomao and everyone around her. Even though Maomao has left the palace and is now an apothecary at the Verdigris House, Jinshi makes time to visit her whenever possible.
Now that everyone knows he’s the Moon Prince, he’s incredibly busy with his royal responsibilities. The upcoming third season will bring him and his love interest closer, but they’ll still have obstacles to overcome. Plus, fans won’t have to wait long – a new season of the anime is coming in just a few months, followed by a movie in December.
