Starting in 2023, Toho Animation and OLM have brought audiences into the captivating world of The Apothecary Diaries, filled with intrigue, attempted murders, and characters living under assumed identities. Aoi Yuki, who voices the main character Maomao, has hinted that the writers have something truly special planned for the series’ first animated film.
Voice actor Yuki revealed details about the next film in the franchise at a screening of Apothecary Diaries in Tokyo on April 12, 2026. They attended the event with co-stars Takeo Otsuka, who plays Jinshi, and Asami Seto, who plays Shisui.
The Apothecary Diaries’ Official Voice of Maomao Hypes New Anime Movie: ‘Something Amazing’
Yuki confirmed that production on Season 3 of The Apothecary Diaries is going well. She then moved on to discuss the first movie in the series, hinting that it will tell a completely new story. “I already have the plot for the film figured out,” she shared.
The story unfolds in a country inspired by historical China. It follows Maomao, a young woman with incredible knowledge of both medicines and poisons, who works as a poison taster. After being kidnapped and forced to work in the imperial palace, her skills and sharp mind impress Jinshi, a powerful eunuch in charge of the Emperor’s favorite concubines.
Maomao quickly becomes a vital member of the palace, and Jinshi often relies on her to figure out secrets and resolve issues within the Rear Palace. Over time, their connection deepens and they grow closer.
At the end of Season 2, both the viewers and Maomao learn Jinshi’s true rank within the royal court. It’s currently unknown how this discovery will affect their relationship. Actress Yuki hasn’t shared details, but Oricon noted she had a mysterious smile when discussing a new development in the latest film, saying, “It’s going to be something amazing. I wish I could say more.”
As of April 2026, details about the upcoming projects are still scarce. The initial teaser from Toho Animation and OLM begins with a sweeping view of a wheat field, accompanied by Jinshi saying, “I’ve had a bit of concern about this region.” Combined with a narrator’s comment that “the story enters a new frontier,” it appears the plot will involve Jinshi and Maomao traveling together to a different country.
In the recently released teaser, Maomao only says, “What is this sense of unease?” But the teaser ends with a dramatic shot of her engulfed in flames. This powerful image supports Yuki’s belief that the upcoming The Apothecary Diaries movie is perfect for the big screen. She explains that it’s a story that “truly deserves” a theatrical release, promising a fun and satisfying experience for fans while maintaining the essence of the series.
The anime film adaptation of The Apothecary Diaries is currently scheduled to be released in December 2026. Season 3 of the series will be split into two parts, with the first premiering in October 2026 and the second in April 2027.
