As a huge anime fan, I’m always excited to see how different series celebrate Halloween, and this year is no exception! Lots of spooky anime are perfect for getting into the seasonal spirit, but some are going the extra mile with special treats for us fans. I was thrilled to see The Apothecary Diaries is continuing its tradition of marking October 31st with something fun, even though we’re still waiting for season three – which, by the way, is coming in 2026! It’s great to see them staying active and engaging with fans during the break.
A new anime image shows characters Maomao and Jinshi dressed as Shinigami, or death gods, for a Halloween special. Death gods are a common figure in anime, appearing in series like Bleach, Death Note, Death Parade, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Black Butler. While it’s unlikely the upcoming third season and movie of The Apothecary Diaries will focus on supernatural themes, Maomao and Jinshi definitely look great in the costumes! See the fun Halloween artwork below.

The Apothecary Diaries‘ Bright Future
The anime adaptation of The Apothecary Diaries debuted in 2023 and has quickly become a major hit. Due to its popularity, a third season has been greenlit, and an anime film is planned for release in 2026. The new season is scheduled for next fall, and the film will feature an original story that will be released in two parts, between the first and second halves of the third season.
With several popular manga series announcing their upcoming conclusions this year, The Apothecary Diaries stands out by having no current plans to end. Since its launch in 2011, creator Natsu Hyuga has consistently released new content – including novels, light novels, and manga – to support the anime adaptation, and even created a spin-off series. Though it doesn’t feature the large-scale battles often seen in other anime, The Apothecary Diaries has gained popularity thanks to its compelling story and well-developed characters.
This year, The Apothecary Diaries has been in the news due to some breaks in its usual release schedule, but this isn’t unusual for the author. The creators of the series have taken time off in the past due to health problems or needing a vacation, and it’s likely to happen again before the series ends – whenever that may be.
