Production for *The Batman Part II* is gaining speed now that the script is finished. As the sequel gets closer to filming, we’re learning more details, and director Matt Reeves recently shared updates on how the film fits into the DC Universe. He also revealed that one star from *The Penguin* series won’t be appearing in *The Batman Part II*.
During a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the *Happy Sad Confused* podcast, Keanu Reeves was asked about potentially contributing to a project within James Gunn’s new DC Universe, as Gunn had previously expressed interest in collaborating with Reeves. Reeves then clarified how *The Batman* fits into the larger DC Universe.
We hadn’t discussed specific plans like that before, but we did talk generally about how things might work, and it would be a lot of fun to explore those ideas. What I’m really hoping for is that we can finish the stories we started and reach the conclusion I originally envisioned. It’s a really exciting prospect.
I’m really honored by what James said, and I’d definitely be excited to collaborate with them. We are actually in talks with them about a project – it’s a DC story, an ‘Elseworlds’ take, but still within the DC universe. I’ll share more about what’s happening and my future plans when the time is right.
One Penguin Star Won’t Make the Sequel
The next Batman movie will continue the story started in *The Batman* and will also connect to the events of *The Penguin*, a series that has recently received a lot of award recognition. Cristin Milioti, who played Sofia Falcone in the series, was particularly praised for her performance. However, director Matt Reeves recently shared some unfortunate news.
Keanu Reeves explained that Cristin Milioti isn’t appearing in this particular installment because the script was already well-developed when they started filming. However, he’s a big fan of her work and thinks she’s fantastic. He praised both her performance and Lauren Cohen’s creation of the character, saying it’s something special, and expressed hope for a future collaboration, though it won’t be in this film.
Reeves explained that they were far enough into the story that making certain changes felt risky. Considering the overall direction and themes, some ideas, while appealing, ultimately didn’t align with the narrative’s path.
The Batman Part II will hit theaters in October of 2027.
