Stream for free one of the top horror movies in found footage style – REC! Although it didn’t hit U.S. theaters, this Spanish film has gained cult status and remains highly popular within the genre. If you haven’t watched it yet, released to critical acclaim back in 2007 with a Rotten Tomatoes Fresh rating of 90%, now is your chance! Originally released in 2008, REC can be streamed for free on Tubi. Surprisingly, all four movies from the series are available to watch on Tubi now. The success of REC even paved the way for an American remake titled Quarantine, starring Jennifer Carpenter, who played a role in Dexter.
In the movie titled “While You Sleep,” the protagonist, a reporter named Angela, is portrayed. Alongside her cameraman, she finds themselves capturing the chilling spread of a disease that transforms humans into cannibals. The directors for this film were Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, who collaborated with Luiso Berdejo on the screenplay. Although it didn’t premiere in US theaters at first, it managed to gross an impressive $32.5 million overseas and even started its own movie series. However, the subsequent films in the franchise failed to garner the same level of praise as the original one did.
After the success of REC, an American version titled Quarantine was commissioned, featuring Carpenter as the main character, a reporter. The film almost exactly replicated REC, but received poor reviews, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 55%. Despite this, it still managed to pull in a reasonable amount at the box office. Quarantine earned $41.3 million globally on a reported budget of $12 million, which was sufficient to spawn a sequel, Quarantine 2: Terminal, in 2011. However, this movie was released directly-to-video and no further sequels have been produced since then.
The U.S. remake of the Spanish film REC, titled Quarantine, was directed by John Erick Dowdle, who collaborated on the screenplay as well. Alongside Carpenter, it featured Steve Harris, Jay Hernandez, Columbus Short, Joey King, and Dania Ramirez in the main roles. In contrast, Quarantine 2: Terminal was penned by writer and director John Pogue and starred Mercedes Mason, Josh Cooke, Bre Blair, Noree Victoria, and Ignacio Serricchio.
Initially launched, the movie REC was warmly received for its ability to immerse viewers in its chilling atmosphere and effectively utilize found footage without becoming excessively dramatic. This film arrived at a peak moment for found footage in horror movies, following the groundbreaking success of The Blair Witch Project in 1999. After that, numerous films employing this technique followed suit, such as the Paranormal Activity series, V/H/S, and later Searching. To this day, found footage horror remains popular, with films like Host, Unfriended, and the Creep series continuing to attract audiences.
Stream REC and its three follow-ups at no cost on Tubi. If you prefer the American adaptation, titled Quarantine, it too is accessible for streaming, along with its less-widely viewed sequel, Quarantine 2: Terminal.
In this version, I’ve used simpler language and made an attempt to make the text more engaging by using “prefer” instead of “if you’d like.” Additionally, I’ve included “less-widely viewed” to give context about Quarantine 2: Terminal.
