Just like every other decade, the 2020s are beginning to be known for certain movie series that will likely be remembered for years to come. While Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series, with a third film coming out soon, seems set to be the most prominent example, other series are also gaining a strong following. Ti West’s X trilogy of horror films quickly became popular, and the Sonic the Hedgehog movies have gone beyond a simple trilogy, potentially becoming the biggest movie franchise of the decade.
Despite a disappointing box office performance for this year’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – even though critics loved it more than the first film in 2025 – the series still has a bright future. Director Danny Boyle recently shared some encouraging news, stating that the third film is expected to arrive next year. This suggests the potential for what could be one of the decade’s best trilogies is still very much alive.
28 Years Later 3 Gets a Promising Update

After 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple performed poorly in theaters, earning only $25 million domestically – a 65% decrease from the original film – the future of the series looked uncertain. This was particularly disappointing for fans who had eagerly awaited a sequel, and because the film strongly hinted at the next story’s direction by bringing back Cillian Murphy’s character. However, director Danny Boyle has stated that scheduling issues prevented filming from beginning this year.
We didn’t have enough time to film this year. The location in Britain has limited filming windows, and we just missed the opportunity. However, everyone is still excited about the project, and Alex Garland has written a fantastic script for it.
When Boyle hints at a special UK location needing careful planning, he’s talking about Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island. This island served as the main setting for the human settlement in the original 28 Years Later. Located just off the English coast, Holy Island has a road that gets covered by the tide twice daily. Plus, you need a permit to visit because it’s a protected area with important historical and natural features.
If this location is the one Boyle mentioned, it fits the story perfectly and hints at the direction the series is taking. The ending of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple showed Spike and Kellie escaping infected, with Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim, and his daughter Sam about to help them. Because filming took place on Lindisfarne, it’s probable the series will bring all its storylines together, similar to The Avengers, which fans have long expected for the final installment.
The third film, currently known as 28 Years Later, will tie up loose ends from the previous movies. It will connect the storylines of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character, Jamie, and the baby born on the island with Spike and Kellie (who is no longer with Jimmy), as well as Cillian Murphy’s Jim and his daughter Sam, and hopefully, Naomie Harris as Selena. Another key element is Chi Lewis-Parry’s character, Samson, the former Alpha who has been cured of his Rage by Dr. Kelson. It’s great that the trilogy is finally being finished, and it’s understandable that it’s taking time, given how many different characters and plotlines need to be brought together.
