Even years after its finale, The Big Bang Theory remains popular, setting the stage for a successful follow-up series. Seven years since the original show ended on CBS, the world created by the characters is still thriving on television. Following Young Sheldon, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage became the most-watched comedy on traditional TV during the 2025-2026 season. Now, the creators are building on this success with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the very first sequel series to move the story forward, reuniting Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.
Unlike most TV show cancellations, The Big Bang Theory didn’t end because viewers lost interest. CBS actually wanted to renew it, but Jim Parsons decided he was ready to leave, and that convinced everyone it was time to finish the series. Even though it stopped airing in 2019, The Big Bang Theory is still incredibly popular, thanks to constant reruns on TV and streaming services. According to Nielsen data from April 13-19, 2026, the show was the fourth most-watched program on streaming platforms, with a total of 753 million minutes watched.
The ongoing success of The Big Bang Theory is a positive sign for Stuart Saves the Universe. Although the new series won’t feature the original Big Bang Theory characters as main cast members, the four leads will be familiar faces to fans of the original show. Kevin Sussman (Stuart), Lauren Lapkus (Denise), Brian Posehn (Bert Kibbler), and John Ross Bowie (Barry Kripke) were all popular supporting characters in the original, science-focused comedy.
Why Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Is The Perfect Way To Continue TBBT

Everyone hoped a sequel featuring the original cast of The Big Bang Theory would be the natural next step after the series ended, but that seems highly unlikely now. While Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage are enjoyable, they aren’t strongly connected to the original show. The trailer for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe suggests a story set within the same world, and launching a new story like this can be successful because it already has a built-in audience familiar with The Big Bang Theory.
The new series offers exciting potential, including the introduction of new characters. Because it’s a science fiction show exploring different realities, it can take the story in surprising directions without contradicting what’s already been established – a problem that limited Young Sheldon and eventually led to its cancellation, even though it was popular. Plus, once Stuart succeeds in saving the universe (hopefully!), the show could give us an update on what Sheldon and his friends have been up to since The Big Bang Theory ended.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe drops all 10 episodes on July 23, 2026, on HBO Max.
