With its new series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the Big Bang Theory universe is evolving, and that’s a good thing – even if it’s a gamble. It’s been almost seven years since The Big Bang Theory ended, but its popularity continues with shows like Young Sheldon and the current hit, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. The original series still performs well in reruns and on streaming services, so it’s no surprise the franchise is growing again with this new spin-off on HBO Max.
Despite still being a hit on CBS when it finished, The Big Bang Theory ended because Jim Parsons decided to leave after twelve seasons. Ever since, fans have often talked about bringing the show back, usually with at least some of the original cast. However, the new series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, won’t feature Sheldon or any of his friends as main characters. It’s a completely fresh start, separate from the original show and the broader Big Bang Theory universe.
Stuart Fails To Save The Universe Is A Full-Blown Sci-Fi Show

With the upcoming release of Stuart Saves the Universe on HBO Max, more information about the show has been released, including initial images that match the story’s setup. The series begins after Stuart, played by Kevin Sussman, accidentally breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, causing reality to fall apart. He must then fix it, embarking on a journey across different universes despite being completely unprepared. He’s aided by Denise (Lauren Lapkus), Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie), and Bert (Brian Posehn) along the way.
It’s clear from the show’s introduction and promotional materials that Stuart Fails to Save the Universe takes place in the same world as The Big Bang Theory. While The Big Bang Theory often touched on scientific ideas – even exploring the idea of multiple universes – it was primarily a show about a group of friends who worked in science and enjoyed nerdy hobbies. Young Sheldon gradually shifted away from science and geek culture, becoming more of a family comedy-drama, which ultimately led to Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage fully embracing that style.
Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn are diving deep into science fiction with the Big Bang Theory spinoff. Unlike previous appearances, sci-fi isn’t just a side element—it’s the central focus of the show, with Stuart and his colleagues journeying through different realities to repair Sheldon and Leonard’s invention and save the world.
Why Stuart Fails To Save The Universe’s TBBT Change Is Better For Its Success

It’s a big gamble for Lorre and his team to move forward with this new direction. Given how well The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, and even George & Mandy’s First Marriage have done, they easily could have stuck with what works. If they wanted to distance Stuart Fails to Save the Universe from the main series, a simple alternate reality storyline would have been a safer bet, explaining the absence of the familiar characters. The Big Bang Theory name alone would have likely brought in a good audience.
The team behind the new show isn’t playing it safe – they’re taking big risks, which is refreshing in a landscape filled with reboots and revivals. While it builds on an existing brand, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe feels genuinely new for the franchise, and that’s what makes it so interesting. Creator Chuck Lorre is known for successful comedies, but this marks his first venture into science fiction, a genre he’s always loved.
Beyond simply switching genres, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe features a genuine underdog in Stuart. Although Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj initially seemed like outsiders, it became apparent they preferred a small, close-knit group. Stuart, who is clearly unprepared for this interdimensional journey, makes his potential success all the more rewarding.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will stream on HBO Max this July.
