Anime has quickly become a major force in entertainment, with both dedicated streaming services and larger platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ offering a wide range of classic and new shows. Surprisingly, recent data suggests that Crunchyroll is no longer the leading anime streaming service – another platform has taken the top spot.
A new report shows Netflix is the most popular place to watch anime. A recent survey found it’s the top streaming service in seven out of nine key countries, including the US, UK, Germany, France, and Brazil. Netflix has previously stated that over half of its subscribers enjoy anime, demonstrating how much the medium is growing in popularity. With over 325 million subscribers compared to Crunchyroll’s 17 million, even a small percentage of Netflix users watching anime would result in significantly higher viewership numbers.
Anime is Taking Over The World

The report highlighted Netflix’s success and also shared data on which anime series are popular around the globe. While Case Closed (also known as Detective Conan) is the most-watched anime in Japan, China, and South Korea, it hasn’t gained the same traction in Western countries. Interestingly, North America wasn’t among the top three countries for anime viewership – that list was topped by Japan, China, and India, and overall viewing numbers have increased considerably since 2020. As anime continues to grow in popularity, its potential within the streaming world seems limitless.
Netflix and Crunchyroll both offer a lot of the same anime series, like One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia. However, Netflix has been increasingly focused on creating its own original anime content recently, adding shows such as Sakamoto Days, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run, and The Summer Hikaru Died to its selection.
Anime’s huge increase in popularity isn’t just due to its creative stories and visuals. The COVID-19 pandemic also played a big part. With many people stuck at home during lockdowns, they started looking for new ways to entertain themselves, and anime filled that need. Interestingly, even after lockdowns ended, anime’s popularity continued to grow, showing it’s more than just a temporary trend.
