Peacock’s hit spy series is officially launching on another mission next year.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting news, and finally NBCUniversal has given us an update on The Day of the Jackal! It’s been almost two years since we finished the first season back in December 2024, but they announced at their upfronts that season 2 is coming in 2027. We don’t have an exact date yet, but knowing it’s on the way is fantastic news!
Based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel and a 1973 film, The Day of the Jackal is a thriller about a dangerous British assassin, known only as “The Jackal” (Eddie Redmayne), and the MI6 officer (Lashana Lynch) trying to stop him. While the show’s first season is based on Forsyth’s single novel, the ending took some liberties with the story, setting up possibilities for future seasons.
The show debuted in late 2024 to widespread praise, currently boasting an 85% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In its first season, The Day of the Jackal received numerous award nominations, including an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography, two awards from SAG-AFTRA, two Golden Globes, and two Critics Choice Awards, among others.
I was completely hooked by season one of The Day of the Jackal! Eddie Redmayne was incredible as the Jackal – it was so tense watching him, especially when they finally revealed his name was actually Alexander Duggan. And Lashana Lynch, who I loved in No Time to Die, was fantastic as the intelligence officer trying to track him down. The whole cast was amazing, really – Úrsula Corberó, Chukwudi Iwuji, Khalid Abdalla, Lia Williams, Eleanor Matsuura, Damian Richardson, Charles Dance, Nick Blood, Kate Dickie, Gerard Kearns… they all brought something special to the show.
Along with Domhnall Gleeson’s return, Peacock has been slowly announcing new cast members for the second season of The Day of the Jackal. Matt Bomer will appear in a recurring role as a new villain, though his character’s details are still secret. Additionally, Weruche Opia (from I May Destroy You) and Pablo Schreiber (known for Halo) will also join the cast in undisclosed recurring roles.
Details about what will happen in the next season of The Day of the Jackal are being kept secret while filming gets underway in Budapest. Production started earlier this spring, but it’s unclear when it will finish. The first season filmed from June to fall 2023 and premiered in November 2024, so we can expect the second season to be completed around the end of summer if that pattern holds.
Don’t expect season 2 of The Day of the Jackal until at least summer 2027, although it might arrive in the fall like the first season. Along with more The Day of the Jackal, NBCUniversal announced that Lucy Liu and Ken Leung will star in a new crime series called Superfakes, which is coming to Peacock in 2027. They’re also working on a new show based on the Fast & Furious franchise.
