Stephen Colbert is ready for his next chapter.
With his last episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert coming up on May 21st, the comedian has found one positive side to CBS cancelling the show. He even joked that the network’s decision might have “saved his life.”
Colbert explained to People magazine that hosting the show daily is incredibly demanding, and he’s leaving to pursue other interests while he still has the energy and time to do so.
However, despite being 62 years old and having hosted The Late Show since 2015 – taking over from David Letterman – he hasn’t spent much time planning what he’ll do after his final show.
He explained that putting on the show requires all of his focus right now. It’s like being a college senior finishing a big project – he needs to get this done first, because it’s taking up all his mental energy. Once the show is finished, he can then consider what’s next.
However, he added, “But I’m available. Yes.”
Although Stephen Colbert was very upset when CBS cancelled The Colbert Report last July due to financial reasons, he’s grateful to have positive things happening to keep him busy during his final week of shows. Luckily, his son John is graduating from college, and his brother Tommy Colbert is getting married around the same time.
Colbert, who is a father to Madeleine, 30, and Peter, 28, and has been married to Evelyn McGee Colbert for 32 years, shared that he’s happy to focus on others. ‘I’m glad the week isn’t all about me,’ he said. ‘It’s more about the people I love.’
Colbert hinted that his final show on May 21st will be a low-key and straightforward event.
More than anything, he hopes people will fondly remember his time in late night television and feel happy when they think about what he accomplished.
Honestly, as a longtime viewer, what always gets to me is how Stephen hopes he and the show can leave people feeling a little better at the end of the day. He’s said it himself – they’re the last thing many people see before bed. Think about that! So much happens throughout the day, but we get the final word, the last laugh, and he truly wants that to be a positive experience for everyone. It’s a simple goal, but it really resonates with me.
