DC Studios’ initial announcement of its TV and film plans included some unexpected projects, and one of the biggest surprises was The Authority. This team isn’t typically what people picture when they think of classic DC heroes, making a big-budget movie about them unusual. Essentially, The Authority is like an adult-oriented version of Marvel’s Avengers – a group of gritty, intense superheroes designed for a more mature and darker world. The announcement of The Authority movie sparked a lot of curiosity about the overall story and themes of the first chapter of the DC Universe, titled “Gods and Monsters.”
DC Universe fans have a lot to discuss today, as James Gunn has confirmed that the movie project for The Authority has been cancelled – at least for the initial phase of the DCU franchise.
James Gunn Confirms The Fate of The Authority DCU Movie

James Gunn, a co-head of DC Studios who’s known for being active on social media, recently clarified the status of the film The Authority. He told a fan he wasn’t involved in writing or directing it and confirmed that the project is currently on hold.
James Gunn stated he never planned to write or direct The Authority, despite online speculation. He explained the script wasn’t fully developed and, more crucially, didn’t fit into the overall plan for the DC Universe, considering both the story and logistical challenges. He left the door open for the possibility in the future, but not in the near term.

This is a change from what James Gunn mentioned last fall. He had hinted that The Authority might become a TV series instead of a movie, because a longer format would allow audiences to get to know the lesser-known characters better, without the high financial risk of a large-budget blockbuster film.
James Gunn recently told Deadline that he spoke with a talented creator about potential DCU projects. He also hinted at the possibility of adapting The Authority – previously planned as a movie – as a series instead. Gunn explained that it’s more challenging to draw audiences to theaters for films featuring lesser-known characters, suggesting he might prioritize different projects. While not a confirmation, this indicates The Authority still has a chance to appear in the DCU.
What Was The Authority Movie About?

In 1999, DC Comics published The Authority under its WildStorm imprint. This book was essentially a fresh start for the Stormwatch series, which originally appeared as one of the first titles from Jim Lee’s Image Comics. Writer Warren Ellis took over Stormwatch when it moved to WildStorm and dramatically changed the team. He eliminated most of the original members in a crossover with Alien and then reimagined the survivors as The Authority. The initial team consisted of Jenny Sparks, Apollo, Midnighter (originally Lucas Trent), Doctor (Jeroen Thornedike), Jack Hawksmoor, Swift (Shen Li-Min), and The Engineer (Angela Spica). The Engineer had previously appeared in the DC Universe Superman movie, played by María Gabriela de Faría, but wasn’t particularly popular with fans, which was seen as a potential problem for the planned spinoff film.
There was a lot of anticipation that The Authority movie would come out shortly after Superman. Many fans thought the film would take inspiration from DC comics like Superman and the Authority, or the story “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice, And The American Way,” as well as the animated movie Superman vs. The Elite. These stories all explore the conflict between Superman’s hopeful heroism and the more ruthless approach of contemporary heroes. James Gunn’s Superman movie added another layer to this idea by introducing The Engineer as someone working for Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).

The 2025 film Superman also took the story in a fresh direction, exploring whether the character’s traditional values still resonate today, and introducing the idea that being kind is a powerful, rebellious act. Importantly, James Gunn successfully reintroduced Superman to audiences and re-established him as a major source of revenue for DC, Warner Bros., and their partners. The success of Superman immediately revitalized the DC Universe, leading to the quick development of the Supergirl movie for this year and a sequel, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, planned for 2027. With Superman films scheduled for three consecutive years, a strong foundation is being built for the broader DCU, making now a less opportune time to focus on The Authority.
Supergirl will be released on June 26th, and Superman: Man of Tomorrow is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Join the discussion about all things DCU on the ComicBook Forum!
