A director has officially signed on to helm the upcoming Dead by Daylight movie – a significant and exciting development! The popular multiplayer video game pits four players as Survivors against one player controlling a Killer, with a wide range of characters to choose from, including classic Killers like The Trapper, The Wraith, and The Hillbilly. As the game approaches its 10th anniversary, fans can look forward to even more from the Dead by Daylight universe, and this long-awaited big screen adaptation is finally moving ahead after several spinoffs.
The project was first picked up by Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster in 2023, but development has been slow. Now, things are moving forward quickly with the announcement that Thordur Palsson (known for The Damned) will direct. This follows the earlier news that Alexandre Aja (Crawl) and David Leslie Johnston-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2) are writing the screenplay. Jason Blum stated:
We’re thrilled to announce this on our tenth anniversary: Thordur will be directing the Dead by Daylight movie! We have complete confidence in their ability to bring the game’s world to life on the big screen.
Wan explained that a million players experience Dead by Daylight each day, and this movie aims to capture the environments they enjoy – places like Greenville and The MacMillan Estate. He emphasized that Thordur, the director, understands what makes the game scary: caring about the characters being hunted. The Damned, a previous work of his, demonstrated an ability to create intense suspense, which is crucial for translating the game’s feeling of dread to film.
Can The Dead By Daylight Movie Work?
While you might not know him, director Patrik Gassmann’s involvement is great news for the upcoming Dead by Daylight movie. He previously directed The Damned, a critically acclaimed horror film (90% on Rotten Tomatoes) known for its suspenseful and atmospheric style. That experience makes him a perfect fit for bringing the tension and thrills of a survival horror story like this one to the big screen.
Looking at what Blumhouse has done before, the Five Nights at Freddy’s films are a good example of their approach. While critics weren’t impressed (with scores of 33% and 17% on Rotten Tomatoes), both movies were made specifically for fans of the games and included elements players enjoyed. This strategy worked – each film earned over $200 million at the box office, proving they resonated with audiences (the first had an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the second a score of 82%).
Now that Palsson is involved, a Dead by Daylight movie has the potential to be truly great. It could offer both critical acclaim – delivering the suspense and creativity of a horror film – and fan service, staying true to the spirit of the game while still providing a fresh experience. Considering how much video game movies have improved lately, there’s reason to be optimistic about this project, especially compared to if it had been attempted a few years ago.
While there’s no confirmed release date or information about the actors yet, the Dead by Daylight movie is moving forward and could begin filming around 2027.
