I’m so thrilled to see that the new film is a massive success! It’s been twenty years since we last saw the original, and it’s already earning a fortune – it’s fantastic!
The 2006 film, made for $35 million, earned $326.5 million globally, including $124.7 million in the United States. The sequel has already made more in just three days than the original did domestically. According to reports, The Devil Wears Prada 2 earned a huge $233.6 million worldwide during its opening weekend, and it’s on track to easily exceed the original film’s total earnings.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 Is Breaking Records
I was so thrilled to see the sequel is already close to being profitable! It earned a fantastic $77 million domestically, exceeding expectations of $73 million, and an incredible $156.6 million internationally. Italy really stepped up, becoming the top-performing country worldwide – apparently, the Milan Fashion Week appearance gave it a huge boost, making it the fourth-biggest Hollywood opening ever there! It’s just amazing to see this kind of success.
The new movie, The Devil Wears Prada 2, is a huge success, quickly surpassing expectations and earning over $180 million worldwide. This makes it the biggest opening weekend ever for the film, both in the US and internationally. It even outperformed Meryl Streep’s 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, which opened with $90 million.
The film also had the biggest international and worldwide opening of Emily Blunt’s career. Plus, for those wondering, it earned more than Oppenheimer did on its opening weekend, surpassing its $176 million global debut.
The sequel cost $100 million to make. While 20th Century Fox hasn’t revealed how much they spent on promoting the film, a typical movie needs to earn about 2.5 times its production cost to cover expenses. With The Devil Wears Prada 2 having already earned $223.6 million, it’s very close to reaching that point.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 Is a Hit
Okay, so the sequel isn’t quite the cultural phenomenon the first Devil Wears Prada was – at least not yet. But honestly, it’s a really good addition to the series. It’s based on Lauren Weisberger’s follow-up novel, Revenge Wears Prada, and thankfully brings back most of the original cast and crew – which is always a plus for me!
The film benefits not only from its fantastic cast – including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt – but also from the return of the original director, David Frankel, and writer, Aline Brosch McKenna. Their continued involvement really enhances the story, making it feel seamless and as if no time has passed at all.
The new movie revisits Andy, now a seasoned journalist with years of experience, as she returns to Runway magazine. She lands the role of Features editor and faces the challenge of revitalizing the publication after a major scandal and in a rapidly evolving media world. The film reflects current trends, blending humor, heart, fashion, and a performance by Lady Gaga.
Critics gave the sequel a 77% ‘Fresh’ rating based on 226 reviews, and audiences loved it even more, with an 87% approval rating. This is a significant improvement over the original film, which received a 75% ‘Fresh’ rating from critics and 76% from audiences. Viewers also rated the sequel higher, giving it an ‘A-‘ CinemaScore compared to the original’s ‘B’. These positive reactions explain the sequel’s strong performance at the box office.
