The Disturbing Masterpiece That Traumatized a Generation Is Finally Getting a 4K Release Ahead of its Remake

Fans of intense, post-apocalyptic films have reason to be excited: the critically acclaimed 1984 movie Threads is getting a new 4K UHD release before a planned remake. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find older films, as fewer physical copies are made and not all movies end up on streaming services. That’s why new releases on Blu-ray and 4K are so important – they help preserve these films for fans. This new release of Threads is a special three-disc edition packed with bonus features.

The critically acclaimed British drama Threads, depicting a nuclear apocalypse, is coming to 4K Blu-ray. Severin Films is releasing a 4K UHD version scanned from the original 16mm film reels. You can preorder it now from the Severin Films website for $45. It will be officially available on July 28th, coinciding with news of a new television adaptation being developed by Warp Films.

What Fans Can Expect From Threads on 4K UHD

The BAFTA-winning film Threads, created by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, originally aired on BBC2 in 1984. It was groundbreaking for its realistic depiction of a world after a nuclear war, and critics widely hailed it as a terrifyingly accurate portrayal of the potential consequences. The story begins with the Soviet Union invading Iran following a US-backed coup, quickly escalating into a full-scale nuclear exchange and global devastation. The film vividly shows the immense loss of life in Britain and the desperate struggle to rebuild society in the aftermath.

This 4K UHD release is packed with bonus content, offering over seven hours of special features. The first disc features the 4K UHD film with audio commentary from director Mick Jackson, film expert Kier-La Janisse, and David Gregory of Severin Films. A second commentary track is included with actress Karen Meagher and TV historian Simon Farquhar. The second disc is a standard Blu-ray that includes both commentary tracks, plus new interviews with Karen Meagher, cinematographer Andrew Dunn, production designer Christopher Robilliard, and writer Stephen Thrower. It also features the original U.S. trailer.

The third disc features a full-length documentary, Survivors: The Spectre of Threads, which explores the making of the film and its impact on the city of Sheffield, England. It also includes an interview with Julie McDowall, author of Attack Warning Red! How Britain Prepared For Nuclear War. As a special bonus, the release comes with a limited-edition slipcase, a postcard designed by Rob Carmichael of SEEN STUDIO, and a replica of the original government public information pamphlet, Protect & Survive.

As a huge cinema fan, I was really excited to hear that Warp Films – the people behind Netflix’s Adolescence – are planning a series remake of Threads! They haven’t announced who’s involved creatively yet, but it’s happening. And with the original Threads just getting a gorgeous 4K UHD release, it feels like we’ll be hearing more about the series very soon, which I’m definitely looking forward to!
