The End of an Era: Sony Spins Off Iconic Television Business

Sony is famous for making electronics people use every day, but for quite some time now, it’s also been a major player in the entertainment industry.

PlayStation, working with Sony Pictures and Sony Music, is actively changing its approach and has been openly discussing its goal to become a leader in new entertainment areas, particularly anime.

It’s not unexpected, then, that the company has announced it will separate its television business into a new partnership with the major Chinese company, TCL.

As part of the agreement, TCL will have majority ownership of the new company with 51%, while Sony will own the remaining 49%. This means Sony will no longer be the primary owner.

Even so, TCL plans to keep using the ‘Sony’ and ‘Bravia’ names on its products, and will continue to incorporate Sony’s renowned picture and sound technology.

TCL will also be bringing its own display technology to the table.

If everything goes well, this partnership could produce top-quality Bravia screens that are more affordable than those from other brands. However, we’ll have to wait and see if that actually happens.

The companies anticipate finalizing their agreement in March. If all goes according to plan and they receive the necessary regulatory approvals, the new business should launch in April 2027.

If the agreement is approved, it will likely signal the end of Sony’s long history in the television industry, a field they’ve been involved in since the 1960s with the introduction of the TV8-301.
