Following the popularity of the first movie, The Family Plan 2 is happening! Mark Wahlberg returns as Dan Morgan, a former spy now working as a security expert, as he prepares for Christmas with his family in Buffalo, New York. His wife (Michelle Monaghan), teenage son (Van Crosby), and younger son (played by twins Peter & Theodore Lindsey) will all be there, but his daughter Nina (Zoe Colletti) is studying in London and won’t be able to make it home for long due to school commitments.
Dad’s plan is to fly the family to London for Christmas and surprise his daughter. However, he gets the surprise when they arrive at her student flat – it’s much bigger than expected, hinting at a huge student loan. Just then, her boyfriend, Omar (Reda Elazouar), emerges from the shower. He’s friendly, cheerful, and incredibly fit.
The film really gets going when Dan’s long-lost brother (Kit Harrington) unexpectedly helps him rob a bank, following the death of their criminal father who died in prison. This sets Dan on a mission to catch his brother, stop a diamond heist, and ultimately save his family. The film is fast-paced and chaotic, but expertly directed by Simon Cellan Jones, a BAFTA award-winning director known for acclaimed TV dramas like Cracker, Our Friends in the North, and Boardwalk Empire. He smoothly transitions to the action genre with this sequel, which he also directed originally.
Okay, so this movie starts as a really charming Christmas film – think classic London Christmas spirit, the kind you see in movies before things changed, shall we say. But then everyone heads to Paris, and suddenly Christmas completely disappears! It’s a bit jarring, honestly. The acting is lovely, especially from Elazouar who’s totally endearing as the boyfriend, but after Paris, it just becomes a straight-up action movie for families. One of the characters even points out, and it’s so true, that this isn’t the Christmas anyone was expecting!
