The First 10 Members of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Ranked by Legacy

The Legion of Super-Heroes is a team of futuristic heroes from DC Comics, famously including a time-traveling Superboy. They first appeared in 1958 in Adventure Comics #247 as a single Superboy story, but quickly became one of DC’s most enduring team franchises thanks to the popularity of that initial appearance. That first story introduced the team’s three founding members – Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, and Saturn Girl – a group of teenage heroes from the 30th century. Creators Otto Binder and Al Plastino envisioned the Legion as a way to revitalize comics after World War II, combining the superhero genre with science fiction elements to offer something new.

R.J. Brande, a wealthy supporter, founded the Legion of Super-Heroes, and by the 1960s, the team had grown to 16 members. Here’s a look at the original 10 members, ranked by how impactful they became.

10) Invisible Kid

Lyle Norg is the original Invisible Kid, first appearing in Action Comics in 1960. A young genius attending Metropolis University, he created a formula that allowed him and his clothes to become invisible. This ability made him a valuable member of the Legion Espionage Squad, and he even led the team for a time. Sadly, he was one of the first Legionnaires to die, killed by the alien Validus in Superboy #203. Jacques Foccart later took on the Invisible Kid identity, continuing the hero’s legacy. Interestingly, this invisible hero debuted 15 months before Marvel Comics introduced the Invisible Girl in Fantastic Four #1.

9) Star Boy

Thom Kallor, known as Star Boy, first appeared in Adventure Comics #282 in 1961. Created by Otto Binder and George Papp, he was born on a space station orbiting the planet Xanthu to parents who were astronomers. Exposure to cosmic radiation gave him the ability to temporarily make objects or people much heavier and denser. At his strongest, he can even compress matter into a black hole. Star Boy is also known for his long-lasting marriage to Dream Girl in the Legion comics. Later, he reappeared as an older hero named Starman in DC’s Justice Society of America.

8) Ultra Boy

Jo Nah, known as Ultra Boy, first appeared in Superboy #98 in 1962, created by Jerry Siegel and Curt Swan. Originally from the planet Rimbor, he gained his powers when a large, whale-like creature engulfed him, exposing him to radiation inside its body. Like Superman, Ultra Boy possesses abilities such as flight, super strength, invulnerability, enhanced vision, and X-ray vision. However, he can only use one of these powers at any given time. He’s considered one of the three most powerful heroes in the Legion of Super-Heroes, alongside Superman (Kal-El) and Mon-El, and he led the Legion on two separate occasions.

7) Chameleon Boy

Chameleon Boy first appeared in Action Comics #267 in 1960, created by Jerry Siegel and Jim Mooney. He was one of the first new members to join the Legion after its original three founders. Originally from the planet Durla, Reep Daggle is a Durlan – a race of shapeshifters who survived a nuclear disaster on their world. He can change his size and shape, adding or losing mass, and even altering his internal organs. Reep founded the Legion Espionage Squad and is the son of one of the Legion’s main financial backers. Notably, he was also among the first DC Comics heroes who didn’t look traditionally human.

6) Triplicate Girl

Luornu Durgo, known as Triplicate Girl, first appeared in Action Comics #276 in 1961. She was created by Jerry Siegel and Jim Mooney. She was the first new member to join the team after its original three founders. Coming from the planet Cargg, she has the natural ability to split into three separate, fully-powered copies of herself. When these copies merge back together, they share all memories and knowledge. A tragic event in Adventure Comics #340 (1966) resulted in the loss of one of her duplicates, leading her to become Duo Damsel. While DC Comics later expanded her powers to allow for unlimited duplication, this ability wasn’t part of her original character in the early days of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

5) Brainiac 5

Brainiac 5, whose real name is Querl Dox, first appeared in Action Comics #276 in 1961 alongside the original members of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He’s become one of the team’s most well-known and beloved heroes. While he claims to be related to the original, evil Brainiac, he chose a path of heroism. Brainiac 5 is incredibly intelligent—possessing what’s considered the highest intellect in the galaxy. He’s credited with inventing the force-shield belt and, along with Invisible Kid, co-creating the Legion Flight Ring, which allows all members of the Legion to fly. Despite his heroic nature and lineage, his story is complex, and his long-standing, unreturned feelings for Supergirl are a famous part of DC Comics history.

4) Lightning Lad

Garth Ranzz, known as Lightning Lad, is one of the original members of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He first appeared in 1958 in Adventure Comics #247, created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. As a child, Garth and his siblings were attacked by creatures made of lightning, which gave him the ability to generate electricity. His brother became the villain Lightning Lord, and his sister, Light Lass, also gained powers. Lightning Lad bravely sacrificed his life protecting his teammates in 1963, but Saturn Girl was able to bring him back. He and Saturn Girl later married in 1977, becoming one of DC Comics’ first superhero couples (following Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel a few years earlier). Throughout his time with the Legion, Lightning Lad has often served as the team’s leader.

3) Saturn Girl

I’ve always been fascinated by Saturn Girl! She’s one of the original Legion of Super-Heroes, first appearing back in 1958. What’s really cool is that she’s from Titan, one of Saturn’s moons, and that’s how she developed her incredible telepathic powers. She can read minds, project thoughts, and even control people – though that takes a lot of effort! It was a huge deal when she became the first female leader of the Legion in 1963, a really groundbreaking moment for superhero comics. Plus, she and Lightning Lad are such a classic couple. It’s great to see DC bringing her back lately, using her to connect the different generations of heroes.

2) Cosmic Boy

Rokk Krinn, known as Cosmic Boy, was one of the original members of the Legion of Super-Heroes, first appearing in Adventure Comics #247 in 1958. He’s a native of the planet Braal, where everyone naturally controls magnetic fields. Cosmic Boy, along with Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl, rescued billionaire R.J. Brande from an assassination attempt, which led Brande to create and fund the Legion. He served as the Legion’s first leader and was the one who suggested forming a formal team instead of just a loose group of heroes. He’s remained a significant character, even getting his own miniseries in 1986 and playing a central role in the 2004 reboot of the Legion of Super-Heroes. He also made an appearance on the TV show Smallville.

1) Superboy (Kal-El)

As a huge Legion of Super-Heroes fan, I think it’s clear that Kal-El – the teenage Superman, or Superboy – has the biggest impact on the team’s history. They first met him way back in Adventure Comics #247 in 1958, traveling back in time to ask for his help. The Legion actually formed because they were so inspired by everything Superboy was doing! He first appeared as a teen in More Fun Comics #101 back in 1945, showing us Clark Kent’s adventures growing up in Smallville. For a while, the comic was even called Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes! But after the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, DC decided to remove Superboy from the Legion’s timeline, and they even had to create a whole separate ‘Pocket Universe’ just to keep his history with the team alive!
