The money wasn’t always there for the cast of Friends.
It’s certainly not a small amount of money that Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer each earned – $22,500 per episode – when Friends first aired in 1994, and it wasn’t something to dismiss then or now.
By uniting and negotiating together as a group starting in 1996, they discovered they had more leverage. This led to steadily increasing salaries, eventually reaching $1 million per episode—totaling $22 million for a season of 22 episodes—by 2002.
As LeBlanc told Details magazine in 2011, he’d earned enough money to become financially independent – what some in Hollywood call ‘fk-you money.’ He stated, “I made that.”
And apparently he’s still making it.
Lisa Kudrow recently explained that she and her ‘Friends’ co-stars continue to earn $20 million annually from royalties, even though the show ended on NBC 22 years ago.
“Was it because of Phoebe Buffay?” the actress joked in an interview with The Times on April 23rd. She also shared that Matthew Perry’s passing in 2023 led her to rewatch the show, and she finally realized just how wonderful it truly was.
Okay, look, I know not every amazing show needs a huge budget, but seriously, Friends wasn’t just good – it was a phenomenon! Everyone was watching it when it first aired, and it still dominates reruns and is one of the biggest things on HBO Max. It’s just… timeless, you know?

Kudrow explained in a 2014 interview with HuffPost Live that the show was very profitable and the cast’s salaries were manageable. This came up when Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, and Jim Parsons received raises on The Big Bang Theory, and people compared it to how the Friends cast negotiated their pay. She said the costs were ‘affordable to whatever entity has to pay it.’
For a show focused on its characters, the Emmy-winning actor explained, it’s reasonable to ask for a creative partnership and involvement in the project.
Big movie deals worth millions aren’t typical in Hollywood, even for famous actors. So, let’s look at what celebrities have shared about how much they actually earn.

According to Joe Giudice, he and his ex-wife Teresa Giudice didn’t make much money during the first season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. He revealed on his daughter Gia’s Casual Chaos podcast in August 2025 that they were paid around $25,000, which he considered a very small amount, but they accepted it.
Creating the first season of the show wasn’t inexpensive. The father of four recalled, “I remember throwing a large party in my living room during the first year, and the whole season probably cost me around $150,000.”

Okay, so I was listening to Jenna Johnson – the Jenna Johnson, who won with Joey last season, and she let it slip that even though there’s no big cash prize for winning Dancing With the Stars, everyone who makes it to the finale still gets paid! Like, they get paid the whole time they’re on the show, which is amazing, and she said there’s even a bonus on top of that! Seriously, I’m obsessed with this show and everything about it, and knowing the contestants are taken care of makes me love it even more!
Johnson explained that winning doesn’t come with a huge payout—it’s mostly about the trophy. And while dancers are guaranteed a paycheck for a certain number of weeks, salaries start relatively low, around $1,200 to $1,600 per episode, though they can potentially earn up to $100,000 for the whole season (though ABC hasn’t officially confirmed these figures). Celebrities, on the other hand, start at a $125,000 salary, and can earn bonuses as they advance, with semifinalists and finalists potentially receiving an extra $50,000.

Jennifer Lawrence, an Academy Award winner, earned $25 million for her role in Adam McKay’s comedy film Don’t Look Up. However, her co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio – also an Oscar winner – received $30 million for the same movie.
Jennifer Lawrence acknowledged that Leonardo DiCaprio earns more at the box office than she does. While she’s happy with her own earnings, she explained to Vanity Fair in December 2020/January 2021 that it’s often awkward for women to ask for equal pay. She’s observed that when women do question a potential pay disparity, they’re often told it’s not about gender, but aren’t given a clear explanation for the difference.
Honestly, I was so proud of Jennifer Lawrence when all that came out. It wasn’t like she was naturally cheerful about it, you know? She really fought to keep her head up after the Sony hack revealed she was paid way less than her male co-stars in American Hustle. And it wasn’t just about her, it sparked a huge conversation about how unfairly women are paid in Hollywood – it was amazing to watch her use her platform like that. It felt like a real turning point, and I’ve been a massive fan ever since!
In a 2017 interview with Channel 4 News, Lawrence explained she wasn’t worried about her income. She said, ‘It’s not about the money; I wasn’t bothered by earning only millions for a film. What really upset me was the unfairness and inequality of it all.’

Compared to Leonardo DiCaprio’s earnings, Jonah Hill received a relatively small $60,000 for his work in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street – before taxes and commissions. This is significantly less than the $10 million earned by the lead actor.
Hill said they offered him very little money during a 2014 appearance on The Howard Stern Show. However, he was eager to work on a film directed by Martin Scorsese, so he quickly agreed to the deal, not wanting anyone to back out.
According to actor Jonah Hill, he’d be willing to sacrifice everything to work with director Martin Scorsese. He explained that earning money isn’t the primary goal for him; films like 22 Jump Street simply allow him to cover expenses. He’d gladly work for Scorsese again, even without financial gain, because pursuing passion projects is what truly matters. He stated he would ‘sell my house and give him all my money’ for the opportunity.

The actress hinted that the main cast of Friends—Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc—each earn around $20 million annually from the show’s continued broadcast. She jokingly suggested to The Times in April 2026 that the reason is simply “Because Phoebe Buffay was so great!”
But in actuality, she praised the talents of her costars for their performances.
I thought my performance was decent, but Jennifer and Courteney were incredible! David and Matt were hilarious, and Matthew Perry? He completely stole the show – he was on another level.

Oprah Winfrey happily accepted only a little bit of green to star in 1985’s The Color Purple.
In a 2023 interview with Essence, the media billionaire shared that they were only paid $35,000 for the film, but it was the most valuable $35,000 they ever made. They explained that the experience was transformative and taught them a great deal.

Jennifer Lopez made history when she played the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla in the 1997 film Selena. She was the first Latina actress to be paid $1 million for a movie role.
Looking back on her first big film, Lopez recalled being naive at the time. “I was so young, I didn’t really understand what was happening,” she told Variety in 2019. She also mentioned being thrilled with the million-dollar offer and felt like the project was a statement piece for everyone involved.
This success allowed her to earn hundreds of millions of dollars more, and often she doesn’t even have to invest any money of her own.
Jennifer Lopez shared with GQ in 2019 that she pursues projects out of passion, not just for financial gain. She even produced and acted in Hustlers without a large salary, choosing to invest in herself and follow her creative instincts – much like she did with Jenny From the Block. She believes in backing her own vision and doing what she loves.

Adrien Brody wasn’t motivated by money when he made The Brutalist. He chose the role of a struggling Hungarian architect in post-World War II America, and it ultimately earned him his second Academy Award for Best Actor, despite a salary of just $250,000.
Brody told Variety he’s ready for a big studio film. He joked that he’s put all his resources into renovating a unique property – a barn he describes as castle-like – in upstate New York.

When asked about his early spending habits after joining Saturday Night Live in 2014 at age 20, Pete Davidson joked to New York magazine, “Do you know how much we make?” He then quipped, “It was about $3,000 per episode, so I probably just bought dinner.”
It’s noteworthy that pay has stayed consistent for new cast members on Saturday Night Live. In 1975, original stars like John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, and Chevy Chase each earned $750 per episode. Adjusting for inflation, that’s about $3,300 in 2014, and roughly $4,428 in 2025.

Kenan Thompson earns significantly more than $3,000 per episode of SNL these days, especially as he begins his 22nd season on the show. However, he didn’t always make that much and started with much smaller paychecks, like many performers do.
In Demi Lovato’s 2024 documentary, Child Star, the former All That cast member shared that their first paid commercial earned them $800. They joked that, being 12 at the time, it felt like a million dollars.

It turns out Gilmore Girls’ status as a beloved rewatchable classic is literally priceless.
Lauren Graham, best known for playing Lorelai Gilmore for seven seasons and then returning for the 2016 revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, recently shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live that she doesn’t receive any ongoing payments (residuals) from Netflix. She jokingly added that she’s been compensated with ‘love and appreciation’ instead.

During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, actress Tommy Dorfman revealed details about her pay for the show 13 Reasons Why. The strike, and a similar one by the Writers Guild of America, were largely caused by streaming services like Netflix not sharing extra profits with actors and crew after a show became successful.
Dorfman revealed on Threads that she earned $29,953.24 for the first season of 13 Reasons Why before her agency, manager (a combined 20% fee), and taxes were taken out. She worked on 8 episodes over six months, doing all the promotion and appearing in key promotional artwork. She also traveled frequently between New York City and San Francisco to film, often working for days without pay and barely qualifying for health insurance.
Dorfman also noted that the show’s first season quickly became very popular, racking up 476 million hours of viewing within its first 28 days – and that’s why they decided to go on strike.

Dax Shepard recently shared with Lauren Graham on his podcast that he was one of the lowest-paid actors during their time on the NBC series Parenthood, which lasted for six seasons. He didn’t mention specific salaries or co-stars.
But, the Armchair Expert host stressed that he did not mind.
Before becoming a parent, I always made it a priority to find out how much my coworkers were earning. I’d either ask them directly or discreetly check with my agent to get the information.
He deliberately avoided finding out details about his family’s history with the company, and this helped him appreciate the experience, even when he started to realize his position within the organization’s hierarchy.

In 2005, George Clooney told the Los Angeles Times that he and Grant Heslov each only made a dollar from the film Good Night, and Good Luck. Clooney explained that to get the movie made, he had to cash his directing check and forgo his acting salary, and Heslov did the same.
I was absolutely thrilled to see George Clooney bring Edward R. Murrow to life on Broadway! It was clearly a passion project for him, and it really paid off. He spent months playing Murrow in a stage version of the film, finishing up in June 2025. And the buzz was incredible even before the official opening on April 3rd – it broke Broadway records for a non-musical, earning over $3.3 million during previews! It’s safe to say he did incredibly well with this role – way more than just a symbolic win for telling an important story.

Christian Bale revealed in a 2022 interview with GQ that he earned very little for his iconic role as Patrick Bateman in the 2000 film American Psycho. He said he was paid the lowest amount legally possible because the production crew wasn’t initially enthusiastic about casting him, with director Mary Harron being his primary supporter.
Bale recalled earning so little that he overheard the makeup artists joking he was paid less than they were, even while he was sitting in the makeup trailer.

Although his uncle was Rico, Jon Heder revealed in 2010 that he originally earned just $1,000 for his role in Napoleon Dynamite.
Once the unexpectedly successful comedy film took off, he successfully asked for a share of the earnings. He told the New Zealand Herald that the offer was increased.

Despite a successful career with acclaimed films like Amistad and Blood Diamond, Djimon Hounsou believes he doesn’t earn enough money in Hollywood.
The Beninese actor told CNN’s Larry Madowo in January 2025 that despite working in film for over twenty years—and having received two Oscar nominations and appeared in numerous blockbuster movies—he still finds it difficult to make ends meet.

In her 2024 memoir, Rebel Rising, Rebel Wilson revealed she earned $3,500 for her work on Bridesmaids, but had to immediately pay the entire amount to the Screen Actors Guild to cover union membership fees. Essentially, she didn’t receive any money for the film.
Still, she wrote, the experience was “everything!”
The Australian actress’s career soared, and her salary dramatically increased. She earned the standard union rate of $65,000 for the 2012 film Pitch Perfect, but by 2017’s Pitch Perfect 3, she was commanding $10 million. In total, she made $20 million from Pitch Perfect 3, Isn’t It Romantic, and The Hustle. However, after paying nearly 50% in taxes, 10% to her agents, and 5% to her lawyer, along with other professional fees, she still considered her earnings a huge success.

In late 2017, Ellen Pompeo successfully renegotiated her contract for Grey’s Anatomy, earning $575,000 per episode. The deal also included a substantial signing bonus and equity in the show, estimated to be worth between $6 and $7 million.
In a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 48-year-old Pompeo explained that she’s reached a point in her career where she confidently asks for what she’s worth, something she feels comes with experience. She acknowledged the industry often doesn’t see her as ‘relevant’ after playing the same character for 14 years, but argued that while many actors can deliver in a show’s first couple of seasons, maintaining that quality after so long is a real accomplishment.
Ellen Pompeo recently thought about the fact that she consistently earned less than her “Grey’s Anatomy” costar, Patrick Dempsey, despite being the show’s central character, and stated she wasn’t resentful of his higher salary.
In a March 2025 episode of her podcast, Call Her Daddy, she explained that because the show was named after her, she felt she deserved equal recognition. She wasn’t upset that someone else received what they did, but rather that her contributions weren’t valued as highly, and she believed that would always be the case.

Jamie Lee Curtis remembers earning $2,000 per week, totaling $8,000, for her first movie, the 1978 film Halloween. As she explained to Rotten Tomatoes in 2018, essentially no one involved with the film received significant pay.
Although the actress playing Laurie Strode made a good amount of money – around four figures – director John Carpenter’s friend, Nick Castle, felt like he was living large earning $25 a day to share the role of Michael Myers. (Actually, it’s Anthony Moran whose face you briefly see when the killer’s mask comes off, and editor Tommy Lee Wallace also appeared on screen as Michael Myers.)
Looking back, it was a whirlwind,” said Castle, who went to film school with Carpenter at USC. He explained to Vanity Fair in 2018 that he was initially drawn to the project simply to learn about filmmaking firsthand. “I figured I’d be observing on set without getting paid, but I ended up making $25 a day just for wearing a rubber mask!”

Taraji P. Henson received an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in the 2008 film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. However, she was still frustrated years later that she only earned $150,000 for the movie, despite initially requesting $500,000.
In a 2021 interview on the Ladies First With Laura Brown podcast, producer Scott Henson explained that Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett each earned around $20 million for the film. He added that their high salaries were justified, saying they deserved to be well-compensated.
Look, when it comes to negotiating, you have to know your worth. I was at a point in my career where I was bringing a lot to the table – I knew I’d help sell tickets for this big film, and I asked for a salary that reflected that. Honestly, I wouldn’t have accepted anything less. I was really disappointed when the initial offer was only $100,000 – it really stung. In the end, I managed to get $150,000, but it was tough. I had to set my ego aside and just get it done, you know?
Henson understands some people might think $150,000 is a large sum of money, and she wants to be clear she’s not ungrateful. However, after taxes and paying her team, the actual amount she’s left with is much less. She estimates that after the government takes 50% ($75,000), and she pays her team 30% of the original amount, she might only have around $40,000 remaining.

Let’s talk about Cate Blanchett’s success! While The Lord of the Rings was a massive hit – seriously, it made almost $3 billion worldwide – her wealth isn’t just from playing Galadriel. She’s built a fantastic career with a lot of diverse roles, and that’s really what’s contributed to her financial success over the years.
When Andy Cohen suggested on Watch What Happens Live in August 2024 that The Lord of the Rings was her most lucrative role, she jokingly replied, “Are you serious?” She explained that the cast didn’t actually receive significant payment for the film – she essentially earned free sandwiches and was allowed to keep her prosthetic ears.

Orlando Bloom, known for his role as Legolas in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, revealed in a 2023 interview on The Howard Stern Show that he earned just $175,000 for all three films.
Hopefully he also got to keep his ears.
