As a comedy enthusiast, I’ve noticed over the years that hearty laughs from theatrical comedies have grown harder to come by due to the surge of streaming services and Hollywood’s focus on blockbuster franchises. It seems like finding a good mid-budget comedy these days is as elusive as spotting Bigfoot! But, luckily this year, there has been a pleasant change in the tide for comedies. Two exceptional films have graced our cinemas, earning immense praise and winning over audiences, on their way to financial triumph.
Although “The Naked Gun” gained broader popularity, A24’s “Friendship” has earned a special place among film enthusiasts as one of the most hilarious (and bleak) comedies in recent cinema history. This Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd collaboration is unlike any other comedy that preceded it, and fans who didn’t catch it in theaters are now in for a treat as it finally arrives on streaming platforms, courtesy of HBO Max.
Friendship Coming to HBO Max Next Month
On Wednesday, it was revealed that the movie titled “Friendship,” directed by Andrew DeYoung, will be added to HBO Max on September 5th (Friday). The following day, on September 6th, the film will have its premiere on HBO’s linear network at 8pm Eastern Time.
There was much excitement within comedy circles when it was unveiled that “Friendship” would be Tim Robinson’s first major starring role in a movie. Known for his quirky and hilarious style of comedy, Robinson gained popularity in recent times due to the success of Netflix’s “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson”. Before this, he was a writer for “Saturday Night Live”.
The quirky, often awkward sense of humor seen in the popular comedy series I Think You Should Leave permeates every moment of the film Friendship. This movie revolves around a suburban father named Craig (Robinson) who finds himself developing a deep friendship with his stylish new neighbor (Paul Rudd). As Craig attempts to appear trendy and make new acquaintances, his life gradually becomes chaotic. In addition to Paul Rudd and Robinson, the cast includes Kate Mara and Jack Dylan Grazer.
In the spring, the movie titled “Friendship” was initially released in cinemas. Despite earning only around $16 million at the box office, which might seem modest compared to blockbuster superhero films, it’s an impressive figure for a low-budget dark comedy produced by an independent studio. Given its minimal costs, “Friendship” managed to turn a profit easily. What makes this film unique is that its popularity is likely to increase gradually as more movie enthusiasts uncover the offbeat humor it offers.
